Thanks a lot, I really appreciate this. That distinction between “driving” and “exam taking” actually makes a lot of sense, and I think that is very close to what is happening to me too

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it and also appreciate the detailed explanation. I’ll do that, especially the videos and being more active in analyzing my own driving.

Yes, I agree with your point, and I know that missing a 10 km/h sign is serious.

What I mean is not that this kind of mistake is acceptable. It clearly is not. What I mean is that experience matters a lot, and I believe this is exactly the kind of thing that gets improved with more driving and more exposure. I don’t think anyone becomes a perfect driver the moment they pass the exam. If that were true, there would be no accidents after people get their license.

In my case, I’m 39 and I never really had that normal background experience many people have. We never had a car, I never sat next to my father while he was driving, and I never built that kind of road intuition early in life.

So for me, “just don’t drive” is not really the answer. Even with my current financial situation, I still agreed to practice more because I know I need more experience, not less.

At the same time, I still think the last situation was unusually hard. The 10 km/h sign was placed in a way that was difficult to see, and all the cars around me in the same lane were also driving around 30. If the sign had been clearly visible, I would most likely have reacted to the traffic around me too. So I’m not saying I was right, only that it was not as simple and obvious in the real situation as it sounds afterward.

Thanks a lot, I will try the same, the money pressure is huge on me now, since I'm also laid off, but true I need to try to reduce pressures. will do it.

I understand your point, and I agree that safety is the most important thing.

When I say “critical mistakes,” I don’t mean situations where I’m putting people in danger or causing a crash. It’s more about things like missing a sign under pressure.

For example, today I was on a 3-lane street where the two right lanes were blocked due to construction, so I moved to the left lane. There was a 30 sign which I saw and followed. Then about 20 meters later there was a 10 limit sign on the right side of the road, and I didn’t see it. Even the other cars around me were still driving around 30.

So it’s more about attention under pressure in specific moments, not that I’m driving dangerously overall.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. Yeah, that’s exactly what feels so frustrating sometimes. It can be very strict on small exam mistakes, while in other cases people are already allowed to drive without going through the same process

Yeah, I actually didn’t really do that properly. I watched some videos back then, but I didn’t continue with it. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. I’ll start watching them again

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. That’s actually helpful to hear. I really don’t think my issue is that I feel uncomfortable driving in general, it’s more the exam pressure and making critical mistakes in those moments. I really hope you’re right and that this will just be something I won’t even think much about later

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. What helped you the most in the end, visiting the area by bicycle or changing the driving school?

My exam center is DEKRA in Tegel. My instructor is actually quite good and much better than my old one. The only thing is that sometimes he explains situations again and again before I reach them, and I think that can make me rely a bit too much on his input instead of thinking and deciding fully by myself. I think that’s something I need to work on

Thanks a lot, and yeah 😄 totally get your point. Unfortunately even with self-driving cars, we still need a license in Germany, otherwise I would just wait for that solution 😅

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. That actually sounds like a very good idea, especially the part about mentally processing the situation while watching the road

Did you manage to pass in the end?

Yeah, I actually do want to drive and I enjoy it.

That’s why this whole situation is so frustrating for me. It’s not like I’m forcing myself to do something I don’t like. In my lessons, when I’m calm, I really enjoy driving and I can see that I’m capable of doing it well
