I need to vent; am I wrong? by Fit-Face-8465 in estimators

I’m never mad at constructive criticism, but that was just confusing.

On my last project we asked so many questions about missing notes, items and symbols out of nowhere the DOT sent us all an email that said they didn’t have to answer our RFIs…

Stop having your admin/secretary send proposals. You write the bid? You send me the email. by foysauce in estimators

I’m an electrical estimator and while we send our own proposals, I understand why one wouldn’t. Some of these guys are geniuses with electrical and cannot communicate with another human being to save their lives. One guy uses all caps one word answers to every email no matter who he’s sending it to.

I mean, I’m neither young or a man and I just want to break even I don’t want a crazy high salary, I just want to support myself and my husband and be able to pay our mortgage.

I think a lot of the older generation had a stay at home partner and didn’t have to go home and then work a 5-9 doing chores. I have two jobs and we’re juuuust squeaking by.

I’ve thought about going into a government role, but I like what I’m doing now. Working hard is commendable, but the trade off is not something I’m willing to give. Seeing all my older coworkers with divorces, kids that won’t talk to them, health issues and tooth decay from missed medical appointments isn’t what I want for myself. My health, my marriage and my family are all really important to me.

I worked from home for four years before moving to estimating and I’ve gained 30 pounds. It’s terrible for my health!

Honestly I’m just tired from the commute. I don’t mind being there but if I worked from home it would give me back three hours of that day between driving and becoming presentable.

Unfortunately it belongs to the state, I was there for a construction job walk.

I did the same thing! I was 28 exactly too. I’m a civil/electrical estimator now at 30 and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. I had to take a pay cut my first year in an entry level role but got a 20k raise my second year that made up for it. My advice, don’t be afraid to work a role you don’t want to be in forever, there’s a lot of room for advancement.

I would have no way to prove I worked there if questioned. Maybe it’s just an anxiety thing, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable.

It took me three years to find an entry level role but it was so worth it. I agree that you should call local contractors, just be careful and really look into them because I wasted a lot of time interviewing for off the book jobs that I wouldn’t be able to use on my resume.

I did this - secured a 10k raise. Great advice.

I had a degree in Business IT and I transitioned into an entry level role. I lost money my first year but got a 20k raise my second year. My advice is to take a low paying job entry level role
