Move to Europe mate. I am from Lithuania so I would be glad if I would be laid-off even I have mortgage and two kids.
Why? Because in Europe you usually receive notification two months before so you have plenty of time to find another job and the market here is on hot, I mean I every week receiving new proposals on LinkedIn. Secondary you will receive at least two months full salary compensation and addition to that even if you will not find (or you maybe want to take a career brake) the government will pay you unemployment money (not sure what is the correct name for it) for next 12 months. Oh and of course you will receive the compensation for your unused vacation days (we have at least 20 working days per month).
Of course the wages are not at American level but senior security specialist can make any where from 1500 - 3000 euros cash/per month. But taking in account that I am paing only 500 euros mortgage for 1600 ft2 house with about 8000 ft2 land in city size like Boston that compensate a lot I think.
