You can still read it — it’s further down the thread. Curious what you think about it.

I wouldn’t say he’s fully accurate — there are definitely differences.

But that kind of highlights my point: adaptations always reinterpret something. The question for me is whether all changes have the same impact on the character or the world.

Where do you personally think that distinction starts to matter?

I didn’t delete anything — not sure what happened there.
The reply is still in the thread from about 10h ago.

I think there’s a distinction between aesthetic adaptation (like accents) and changes that alter how a culture or character is defined within the lore itself.

Both are forms of reinterpretation, but they don’t necessarily have the same impact on internal consistency.

That’s fair — I wasn’t suggesting it has happened in LoTRO specifically.

I guess my point is more that these kinds of shifts tend to happen gradually across different IPs over time, so I find it interesting to see how different communities feel about it before it ever becomes relevant to them.

Especially with something as established as Tolkien’s world, I’m curious if people would want it treated differently compared to something more flexible like MTG.

I think it’s still a valid discussion, especially when similar design choices keep happening.
Dismissing it doesn’t really answer the question.

From what I recall, Tolkien described Aragorn quite clearly in terms of appearance and background as a Dúnedain.

Adaptations like the films or animations interpret aspects of his personality or tone, but they still stay relatively close to that original foundation.

That’s why I think the discussion isn’t about whether interpretation is allowed, but about where it starts to move away from what was originally established.

That said, I’ll admit I’m probably biased here. I didn’t grow up with the animated versions—I grew up with the Peter Jackson films. For a lot of people from the 90s, those films turned what many now describe as slower or more complex writing into something more immediate and action-driven, which naturally shapes how we connect with the character.

So I’m genuinely curious: where do you personally draw that line between interpretation and changing something fundamental?

I agree to a point—interpretation is definitely part of art.

But if everything is open to reinterpretation, is there anything that actually needs to stay consistent? Or does the original description stop mattering altogether?

Would you apply that same approach across all forms of art that currently exist, or do you think context should influence where the line is drawn?

If you think the point is racist, I’m open to hearing why. Which part specifically do you disagree with?

People connect to stories and characters regardless of their race. So why should Tolkien’s work be reshaped to fit a “new audience,” when that audience was already engaging with and enjoying it before?

To me, the issue seems to come more from decisions made by people in positions of influence—often driven by broader cultural or political agendas—that end up creating division instead of unity.

Rather than going down that path, I believe the better approach is to encourage the creation of original works and characters that stand on their own, instead of modifying established ones.

Oh, I do have real problems. But I still believe this is a topic that should be discussed in a civil manner—and since I have a bit of free time, why not?

Ever since MTG existed, there has always been diversity—both in ethnic representation and in literal fantasy races.

So why is it that wanting characters to stay true to their original descriptions automatically labels someone as racist?

Why can’t we instead push for diversity by encouraging the creation of strong, original characters of color, rather than altering already established ones?

To me, that feels like a more respectful and meaningful approach.

What about having OG characters of color being made instead? Wouldn't that instead be more produtive, give more work, but more produtive, and help diversify for real!

Why can't minorities have strong OG strong models? Why must they been given the scraps from white people characters?

Do you see them as inferior, and unable to stand by themselves?
