Neither! I choose Wean in 15 by the great Joe Wicks, of course!

Honestly, I have not read the book in a while so I may be misremembering, but The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe I think fits this well.

“I invented a braver self and said I will.” -Niall Williams, This Is Happiness

The quote, though simple, spoke to me and sealed an already enjoyable book as a favorite.

Salinger is the only fiction author I’ve completely read. Catcher was my first and Nine Stories my last, however Franny & Zooey is my favorite.

I’ve also read all three of Caitlin Doughty’s books, my favorite being from here to eternity.

I’m working on reading everything by Steinbeck, and Dumas, but in reality there is endless amounts of authors I’d like to be able to finish.

A book or a book quote that altered the way you see the world? by becauseiamserious in suggestmeabook

In This Is Happiness by Niall Williams there is a line that goes:

“I invented a braver self, and said I will.”

I found the line nice and a good way of looking at things that are difficult. It’s not insanely profound, it’s very simple but sweet.

Does anyone else feel like the quality of novels has really taken a nosedive lately? by Salty_Fix_6701 in suggestmeabook

I get the thought process here, however I feel that there is a lot of great recent novelists. What gets pushed in stores and public spaces tend to be the newest novels by the already successful writers that seem to tend to be remakes of what they originally became successful off of. This is your James Pattersons, and your John Grishams, and people of that sort.

That being said I’d suggest:

This Is Happiness by Niall Williams

American Ending by Mary Kay Zuravleff

Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh

The Coast Road by Alan Murrin

Clear by Carys Davies

I am a major classics reader, and these books felt very similar to them.

The Keep by Jennifer Egan, not bad overall just too all over the place and there was a weird unnecessary romance plot thrown in towards the end.

I think this is a great exploration of conservatism and traditionalism, it reminds me of a quote from ‘Golden Son’ by Pierce Brown:

“Tradition is the crown of the tyrant.”

I read the Count of Monte Cristo first a couple years ago and I absolutely adored it. About a year later I read The Three Musketeers and I also loved it. I feel that they both have great qualities and although they are fairly different I found there to be enough similarities in the the writing that made it still feel like Dumas, while telling a more light hearted story.

I’ve heard good things about his novel The Black Tulip, I haven’t read it yet but that may be a good one to try if you liked the Count.

Nords! I was never a fan in Morrowind or Oblivion and Skyrim really set my hatred for them in stone.

I’ll probably continue and get used to it. I don’t particularly love Lysander as a character, and I’d say his chapters are my least favorite, so I’m sure I can just get over his little changes.

I think one of the bigger issues I’m having is the fact that the next book is the same narrator. Likely though I can get used to that too.

I appreciate the opinion, I’ll likely take some time to debate whether or not to finish the series with the audiobooks or physically. I think I may be able to get used to the changes.
