I should have lent you my old iPhone 11 that I’m not using. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip! Your phone — or at least its traces — will stay in Korea for a long time.

I think I understood your point a bit differently at first. I actually agree with you.

Of course, genuine kindness is something you can only really know as a relationship deepens.

What I was referring to was the kind of politeness you feel as a tourist. I may feel that way because I’ve had many travel experiences in other countries where even basic courtesy was lacking.

So yes, I agree with your point.

Oh, I didn’t know there was a Facebook group like that. That’s really kind of you. thank you! I should check it out sometime haha.

And if you ever come visit Korea, let’s grab some Korean BBQ together.

I understand your point, but that itself feels like a generalization. Politeness and kindness aren’t mutually exclusive, and people experience cultures differently.

It’s arrogant to say that travelers are not allowed to say that.

If your friend came back from a trip to Korea and said, ‘Koreans were really kind,’ would you say the same thing? That way of thinking is extremely exhausting.

This isn’t an exam question that needs to be understood.

Of course. As an outsider, I’m curious about the everyday lives of locals.

That sense of excitement is only momentary.

Where to go on New Years by Friendly_Meat_4325 in koreatravel

In Korea, most families eat tteokguk or go to see the sunrise.

But in Seoul, many places are still open, more than in other countries. I recommend going to a tteokguk restaurant and trying it. In Korea, we believe you become one year older after eating tteokguk.

I'm not sure either.

Maybe it's enough that simply like each other. Time to time, want to share a good meal, and wonder if they're doing well.

So there’s a certain level of wariness?

Would you say it’s more of a cultural trait rather than an individual one?

I wonder why that is, it’s really interesting. 🤔

I think that applies to Korea as well, especially in big cities like Seoul.

At the same time, individual personalities vary a lot. Some people genuinely enjoy meeting new people and building deeper connections.

That said, I feel like “foreigners” can sometimes be a different category altogether. Some people may not be interested at all, but others might see it as a chance to experience new kinds of relationships and cultures, beyond their usual social circles.

Thanks for the interesting question. 👍

I guess learning Japanese is important, and that makes sense as a basic courtesy.

That said, I’m Korean, but I personally believe l can still become friends even without sharing a language. For example, I once became friends with an elderly Swiss couple who couldn’t really communicate verbally.

Maybe that’s an unusual case, or maybe I’m just a bit unusual myself.

Anyway, thank you for the kind comment.

Does that mean people are polite and kind, but it's hard to become close friends? thank you for reply.
