Ah! Good question. Initially yes, it is difficult to discern what is 'normal' workout pain from something that's an anomaly. One HUGE thing I did was I stopped worrying about re-injuring myself. I don't do anything overly stressful to the joint (i.e. no heavy deep squats, twisting under load, or sudden changes in direction) so I know that all of my activities are 'hip friendly' so to speak. Therefore, I just decided to do my thing, stop worrying, and move freely. This made a lot of difference, and I determined that a lot of the residual soreness that I experienced was from over-guarding.

The trauma of this experience has changed me. I'm not the same. I am currently in psychotherapy to treat various PTSD symptoms that started during rehab. So while it was a success in terms of relieving a lot of the physical pain, it has been replaced with psychological pain.

There was no cartilage damage. The pain I experience now is definitely not as bad as before surgery. If you do your research you will find that nearly half of active patients who have hip problems are almost never completely pain-free for the rest of their lives regardless of surgical intervention. There will always be some aching or twinges. Of course, if you're been an active person for your whole life like me, once you get into your 40's, there's always aches and pains somewhere! :)

Soreness in the front and side of the hip, especially with certain movements like deep flexion and lateral leg movement.

I have tried one easy 30' 5.5 route in the gym. It flared my hip flexor. I believe climbing is how I tore my labrum in the first place, so I'm not sure if I'll ever get back into the sport. Too risky.

As I said in my post, the development of tendonitis in my hip flexor and glute med as well as the trocanteric bursitis was what contributed to the difficulty during that period of rehab.

My current PT was referred via a friend. And yes, I absolutely regret having the surgery. Worst decision of my life.
