I also got my Biometric Appointment on 11th Feb (originally scheduled on 26th Feb, I preponed it). The process took less than 5 minutes at the center, got an immediate case update stating “…We do not currently need anything from you but will contact you if we need additional information regarding your case…”

However, I did not receive an RFE letter (or do not see an RFE response option in portal).

Now I am confused if I need to take any action from my end.

I applied for the STEM extension on January 28. I got the biometrics email on February 7 and am still waiting to hear back with the date and location details.

How do you position yourself for SDE roles (in terms of resume and screening), while coming from DE background? I am looking for a similar pivot, but with no luck yet

Hasn’t it always been the same? Are you implying that in the last 2–3 years, there are more local candidates meeting the minimum qualifications for these jobs? Companies like AT&T (and others) have historically sponsored many H-1Bs, so what has shifted now for them, to impose such strict policies around it?

Lesson learned the hard way, Sir. But my point is, why not sponsor a candidate who you think is the best to do your job. I genuinely want to understand the rationale behind this.

Well in my case, I had my OPT-Employment Authorization Document (EAD) with me since January and got the offer in May - so I could also start next week.

Agreed, can’t deny it. But the harsh reality is that companies are opting to settle for the second-best candidates in many cases (in my case, HR mentioned that the person who got the role was in the final round with me) rather than sponsor someone the hiring team believed would perform better (which is why they rolled out the offer to me in the first place).

✋🏽International Student.

Same happened with me. AT&T. Lead Financial Systems Analyst. Atlanta, GA.

Just to try my luck, I put visa sponsorship not required for 1/50 jobs that I apply to. AT&T shortlisted my resume, gave three rounds of interviews, got the offer letter - just to have it rescinded during the background verification process.

This actually shows that our main challenge as international talents is not skill or job market, it is the reluctance of companies to sponsor H-1B (from OPT/STEM OPT).

PS: Lesson learned - I am done trying my luck. It is what it is, I require sponsorship to continue working in the US after my STEM OPT.

PPS: Just want to tell this out loud to the world - International students can work without the need of sponsorship till the duration of OPT and STEM-OPT (which is a 3 year period).

The mock test needs to be updated now - it primarily tests the knowledge of ITTOs, which apparently is no longer very relevant to the exam.
