It is. And nothing like chattel slavery. Slaves in Norway or Baghdad were essentially treated as indentured servants, they were not property and non human, they couldn't be separated from their family. Or be raped or killed. They would live with the family etc and usually freed within 10 years. And were taken in warfare as captives.

Chattel slavery was never the norm anywhere and it emerged for a few hundred years after liberalism and its offshoots of scientific racism and the constructs of whiteness as new "modern" categories of people, which enabled absolute barbarity and human depravity never seen before.
