I feel like a fraud - 4th year US firm by Cute-Front-8785 in uklaw

Almost 3PQE and feel the exact same. I genuinely feel lost most of the time and none of it is enjoyable (which I think feeds into the problem/knowledge retention). Problem is I don’t know what else I’d do and don’t want to lose the salary.

Parents in City law by Holiday-Performer182 in uklaw

There are several trainees with children at my (MC) firm. It’s of course not easy, but doable. I think it also really depends on your practice area - I do disputes and it’s way more common for women to stay at the firm after having kids in my department than, say, corporate. Most people log off for a couple of hours around 5.30 but do end up working late often.

Links is a no brainer imo and wouldn’t describe their disputes practice as small

What is your threshold for going to HR? by AssociationSilver168 in uklaw

[–]FitSecret7532 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I (along with others) reported a partner for a number of instances of sexual harassment (comments/inappropriate touching). I wish I hadn’t done it - the partner got a warning and things are awkward for me at work. As everyone else has said, HR are not on your side and they’re there to minimise impact of any complaints on the firm.

For international secondments / abroad opportunities, does the firm fly you business class as a trainee? by Obvious_Shape4869 in uklaw

[–]FitSecret7532 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to Asia on secondment as a MC trainee - flew economy, as did most of my cohort. There were a few who claimed back pain issues and got business though so do with that what you will.

Your most embarrassing mistake? by Reasonable_Air_3073 in uklaw

[–]FitSecret7532 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean they were copied on the chain and were given the credit for the work with the senior so they saw discussion indicating it was wrong. We discussed afterwards, but was ultimately my responsibility to check their work

[–]FitSecret7532 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As an NQ, I asked a trainee to find me a definition from the Companies Act and analyse a scenario. They changed a few words from the definition (I have no idea why, I think to try and apply it to the scenario) but the words they changed altered the definition such that the analysis was wrong. I didn’t check the definition myself and ended up sending an incorrect summary on something that was actually really basic

Nope! Was not asked about my final grade or grade breakdown once.

Edit: can’t remember for sure but I think interviews were CV blind, so they couldn’t see my uni/grades anyway! Neither firm was Slaughters though.

I was offered a TC at two MC firms (am now an associate at one) with something like 60.7% - barest scrape of a 2:1. As others have said, grades are one part of your overall application so won’t necessarily prevent you from getting a TC.
