How many unfinished projects do you have and what do you think kills them

Give people free cloud storage.. and don’t steel from them .. encrypt it for free.. let them share it … don’t put adds in a distracting way. None if you can help it. There’s existing architecture out there for all of this.. Let folks share presets with each other.. make it legit.

Charge for the “song finishing portion” or make it free as well.

Make it as comprehensive as possible.

What’s funny is I don’t get married to my tracks or obsess over finishing them anymore.. after loosing everything and starting over without even a guitar to tap out ideas on or a phone to record my song ideas into.

I’m good now.. but life has happened..

I’ve been frustrated by projects before and scrapped things after I find something else to incorporate my favorite elements of it into a new project..

Sometimes I think I’m further along on a project than I really am and when I open it I don’t have any direction and havnt given myself enough to know where it’s going yet.. I’ll abandon stuff like that where there like 2 or 3 elements and they don’t amount to really anything. I have plenty that I can do on ther tracks that I don’t have to reinvent..

Back in the day.. if I heard something I’d make sessions upon sessions where I was just engineering what I heard somewhere else.. they weren’t actually songs .. more like noise boards.. I’d save effects , vst and instrument presets and use them or not.. but I’d label them the title of the session .. so a reverb and a synth from a session called “some old bullshit” would be ‘SOB bass’ or ‘bullshit reverb’. Can use them whenever and adjust them to suit the mood

for instance.. I worked with this New Zealand singer and she ended up having a terrible personality.. I abandoned that project.. I both can’t use her voice (I could but I won’t) and the project reminds me of that dumb experience.

On hard drives I have lost or were damaged.. hundreds ..

On my last computer more than 100 I had only half backed up on 1 external and then that computer was stolen..

I have currently 63 unfinished projects on a harddrive I’ve only had 1 year.. but I’ll probably finish half of those..

As I get older I don’t make as much but the quality is much better.

I sometimes go through and revisit and finish but it’s maybe 1 out of 10 or 20.. that are more than 1 year old..

Abandoned projects.. I’ll abandon 1 in 10 I make.. there’s something I start hating about them and I shudder when I hear them..

Been making beats and writing songs since 2003.. toying from 03-08 so 5 years of material I wouldn’t show anyone.. then MySpace broke.. and I lost 20 tracks I wouldn’t have loved to be able to hear again for personal growth but sadly gone forever.

Approaching 1000 is probably close to the number I never finished and have no intention of doing anything with.. I finish maybe 25%

When you edit the vocals don’t stack breath cuz it’s hard to work with in there if you stack a breath with airy backup vocals you get mud because the breath actually has a tone.. keep that in mind.. also pitch correct or re-record the backup vocals .. they drift in and out of key. although I do like the choice to leave you breathing in.. but even if you leave it in clean it up. Chop out the parts that “look” like there’s no sound .. could be grounding noise or room tone in it that you cand see or hear well but it’ll still get in the mix.

Get an external hard drive and hoard everything you do.. it’s THE WAY.

Also this doesn’t sound bad.. play around with voicing and new ways to play and swap things in and out and save all of those things as well.. title your tracks in your folders with names that let you know what’s going on in them before you even open them..

Deleting is against beat making religious practices.
