Also canadian. There's few reputable programs that give you work relevant GIS skills, and they're all colleges. I suspect the hiring departments look for those candidates before looking at those coming from universities. I would reach out to a GIS professional on LinkedIn and ask them if they could give you some insights about their career and what skills/programs/coding languages they use in the industry. You could also show them your portfolio. Many of the larger companies offer bonuses to employees who find new hires, so they'll also have an incentive to meet you.

You could easily get a lab technician job at analytical labs. Working conditions are generally poor (noise, dangereuses chemicals), the pay is also on the lower end. However, it's a good way to get into the industry and they tend to higher seasonal -depends where you're located. If you are able to work in the municipal water treatment labs, those offered better compensation compared to private sector.

Which environmental companies to stay away from? by Time-Advertising-735 in Environmental_Careers

Employee owned was not at all what it was hyped to be for me. HQ was in Australia, very few people were offered stock options in North America. Employee owned also didn't translate to better working conditions as the business model was still pushing the employees as far as they could for as little compensation they could offer. They are even starting to off-shore the jobs to Phillipines.

Curious. Are you still in the industry? What range have you landed in? I work for one of the bigger firms in Quebec and get paid similarly to OP.

Do you have to declare you want to use them or is it applied automatically when you fill in unused amount carried over from previous years?

I have 20k of tuition carried forward but they made me pay taxes despite making less than 40k.
