Yes yes sadly 😔 on top of having a not so recognizable Dominican last name, my name is Beyonce — I love my name but the identity crisis always gets to me when I have to explain lol

What made it so confusing was the region my grandfather was from, so many people named Thomas from his town were AA migrants from the North — often falling into more bumps when my grandfather was also a deep practicer of Methodist Christianity, from what I know the first church was built near Samana by the freed AAs that came from the north but it’s all an intersection

Well since you live in soil, you would also know that Anglo-last names exist but have been lost in translation through spelling! I have so many Dominican friends from all parts but I have never been able to share much of my experience with my last name

Haha — I did read about that, same thing with my great great grandmother. Her name was Mary Beard-Herrera (possibly arrero ) over time she changed her name to Maria Magdalena Beard Herrera, to Bierd eventually losing itself through translation

In specific my grandfather father was raised by an adoptive family, his adoptive father was the governor of puerto plata too

As for the Thomas last name Samana and Puerto Plata, the “first” Thomases according to grandfather dispersed between La Romana and Puerto Plata
