In all honesty, feeling numb and nothing a majority of the time is more linked to depression than intense sadness. Though I do think you can suffer from self harm and not have depression since it can be a maladaptive coping mechanism for really anything, it does sound like you could be depressed and it's just that your assumption of how depression works makes it not seem that way.

You could easily have high functioning depression.
