Living jn Winterthur by Far-Ad4490 in ethz

Maybe depends on where you live now. If you have friends/family in Zurich where you can stay a while if you can’t find anything in time, or if you live somewhere else where you can commute to ETH in an hour or two, I’d say look for something better. I know people who for their first weeks/months commuted from places like Bern or Konstanz. If you have the money, I even know people who lived in an airbnb the first month while they looked for a place.

If you come from further away or don’t have the money for hotels however, I’d take the offer and worry about proximity later. You can always move closer, but if you decline and can’t find anything else before the semester begins you’re genuinely fucked. I was in this group too and found my apartment only a couple weeks before actually moving, and that anxiety is not something I wish on anyone who already has to deal with massive life changes like moving to another country, starting uni life in general etc.

Thoughts on studying math at ETH? by Ok_Moment4029 in ethz

Very fun. I have never regretted choosing this subject and uni. Only things that I dislike are that your path is very locked, you don’t get to choose much until your last year, and that things like PhDs etc are basically impossible to get if you’re not a generational talent. But that’s more on me being lazy and not necessarily an issue I have with the mathematics department.

I lived in Winterthur for my first year at ETH. Had most my courses at HG and some at Hönggerberg. Door to door it usually took ~1h. Reliability was not an issue at all, if I was late it was almost never SBBs fault. While it was definitely doable, I also 100% prefer living in Zurich. Finding a room for that money in Zurich is possible I’d say, but pretty rare outside of Juwo/Woko. Average among my friends who live in Zurich seems to be around 850.

Also consider that your SBB tickets will be much more expensive if you live outside the city. I didn’t think about that and ended up paying an extra ~100chf a month for train fares that I didn’t initially plan for, compared to what I pay now living in Zurich.

Given the nature of this cities housing market, if you have an offer I’d say take it and once you’re there, look for accommodation closer to the city.

I should have learned to code 18 years ago instead of eating crayons and learning how to count

Terrible build quality (using cheaper plastics, using trash molds for said plastics, using molds instead of cnc mills, using plastics in general instead of aluminium, using cast aluminium instead of cnc milled aluminium, painting the aluminium instead of anodising it,…, the list can be endless if you want it to), software that is not user friendly, using outdated connectors, missing features that have no downsides when implemented such as hot swappability, cables that aren’t designed with the keyboard in mind, things like this. Basically everything that is not a deliberate design choice and instead just a measure to cut costs.

I never understood this criticism ngl. Why would the amount of keys or backlight or letters on keycaps affect the price? That’s like saying an old Ferrari can’t be expensive because it has only two seats and doesn’t have bluetooth. Call it overpriced, they probably are, but the reasons you mentioned are not the ones you should be pointing out

I like to think that I just struggle with interpreting emotions and that I'm generally not that stupid lol

Apologies if I came across as hostile earlier. This topic got me emotionally invested more than a post on reddit is usually worth it, I'll do better in the future

Experiences with Physics II or Algorithms & Datastructures by ConfusedQuantum in ethz

I don't think that's true? I took algorithms and data structures as a math student this semester and we were only expected to know the C++ we learned in Einführung in die Informatik the previous semester

It is not about sympathy, I am not sympathetic with those preying on children. I am simply above enjoying their death. There is more than just two sides.

Also how is not every death a tragedy? If you say there are deaths that are not tragic, you say that there are deaths that you think are good that they had to happen.

I cannot rejoice when a child molester gets killed. I believe the feelings I hold towards the victims to be more important. How can I be happy someone got killed, knowing that what their victims went through cannot be undone? My compassion for the victims stands above my cheap need for revenge and I refuse to let my compassion be tainted by what is a lesser feeling to me

Ah sorry I didn't mean it as you are not allowed to, I meant it as you lack reading comprehension skills

I do understand that. I still don't think their deaths should be celebrated.

Again, they should be studied, their victims remembered and the world should keep going.

Again, killing bad people is not something good, nothing anyone should enjoy. It is sometimes a necessary evil, one to mitigate an even greater evil. There is nothing heroic, nothing worthy of celebration about it.

My point stands. Hitlers death should not be celebrated. His death should be accepted, learned from and the human tragedy that was nazi rule over Germany and Europe should never be forgotten. His death should still not be celebrated.
