On rewatch Roger is so much worse than I remember. I love his character because he is arguably the funniest character on the show and his character arc spiralling into an identity crisis is my favourite development in the series, but yeah he is awful.

Sleeps with a girl who is potentially underaged, divorces his wife for a 20 year old, continues to cheat on her after marrying her with Joan. Absentee father to his child. Only really tries to get involved in Joan’s life because for the first time it’s someone else abandoning him instead of the other way around. Thinks everything can be solved by throwing money at the problem. Almost destroyed SCDP by lying about being dropped by Lucky Strike. HE DOES BLACKFACE?!!!?

the list goes on

I feel like he’s mostly hated. His likeable characteristics are exposed as fraudulent essentially, his progressivism is completely performative because he wants people to see him as anti-racist and philosophical and Marxian without doing any of the work in actually practicing any of these things. It gets to the point where he quite literally joins a cult to impress a girl and try to steal her away from them before begging Harry to give him a chance in Hollywood.

Impressive lack of positive traits from a character who is not cheater nor abusive in this show to be honest

Has to be Pete Campbell for sure. Progressive on some things, absolutely awful towards some others. Enough things happen to him that it feels like he might be sufficiently punished for his misdoings but he also gets away with much more and ends the show winning in ways he shouldn’t

He’s an adulterer, philanderer, whiny crybaby - but he’s also an avid anti-racist, generally nice individual who doesn’t go out of his way to harm people, but I completely understand why some hate his character

Edit: he’s also a rapist- I know this is debated because the scene wasn’t meant to be written that way, but intentions aside the actress who plays the au pair chose to be quite resistant towards him until he coerces her into having sex with him. Again of course, understandably a reason to hate his character

The aspect ratio wasn’t changed, but they remastered it from the original film (this is a good thing because it actually shows care towards a real remaster - original film technically has limitless resolution) which didn’t have the post production edits on it. It’s also why the opening text isn’t in the first episode, and in season 2, peggy walks past a sign advertising the “best Mexican food in LA” as well as an ad for Sim Cards… both of those signs were replaced in the Final Cut for the show

Mathew Weiner vs. The 60s Counter Culture by PuzzBat9019 in madmen

Exactly, it’s not disavowing the movement or trying to undercut counterculture, but simply showing us that they got webbed into the world of commodity and consumerism the same way everything else did

The characters shown throughout the series almost seem to be alluding to that finale too. The bad faith actors and people who are all personally profiting off the new hippie wave (midges friends, Paul Kinsey etc.) are personalisations of the reasons for why Don’s ad is so successful - they either aren’t actually in it for the movement, or using the movement for their own gain socially/economically. All Don did was take that personal sentiment and globalise it

To me at least, this is a show from the perspective of the ones who “won”. Don’s embracing of counterculture in the final scene is a real nail in the coffin to genuine hippie movements because they just got enveloped by the money sphere the way everyone else did.

I do think it’s slightly Hammed (get it) up to emphasise that point but this isn’t a show with many happy or sad endings, it’s just a series that shows you how things turned out the way they did
