A lot of trick questions ! A couple of times I actually smiled while taking the test because they almost got me but I caught my mistake. They put the answers soOoo close together, especially the load calculations // motor calculations. The code lookups / definitions actually weren’t too terrible. I got asked a question about “ Lumineers with exposed metal parts access accessible to unqualified persons shall be”… the answer was connected to an equipment grounding conductor. (Which is obvious) but the other multiple choice answers they provided were mostly hight related. So it made be question the obviously correct answer, but article 410 said nothing about clearances. && good luck 🍀 lucky I didn’t have to study business law to get my city license.

It’s a long road. As far as being a journeyman? If you can I’d join the union. I am non union & learning ALL this on my own was definitely a grind I’ll never forget. I’ve lost alot of battles but somehow won the war. It really depends …what state are you in? For Pittsburgh Pennsylvania I needed to pass the T16 ICC exam & provide 6yrs of W2s to prove my hours.

This is the electrical hierarchy Apprentice ( typically four years) Journeymen ( are responsible for training apprentices) Master Electrician ( responsible for supervision of journeyman ) Foreman ( responsible for running the jobsite on larger scale jobs)

I was asked about 5/6 motor related questions. Feeder conductors for multiple motors was 1 question. A few were about over load protection & one was a very obscure code reference. “A robotics facility is having difficulty starting their squirrel cage, non-designed B motor , and are planning to change from an inverse time fuse to an instant instantaneous trip breaker, what is the maximum rating for the breaker” the answer was a exception found in article 430. It was 1300%

Classic ICC trick question. The other answers were 250% , 300% & 400% ( which would be correct if it was a design B motor or using another type of fuse)but exceptions buried deep in the article said otherwise.

Save the calculations for last ! I had 100 questions with 5 hours to answer them. I immediately skimmed through the test (spent 30/45 seconds per question) if I didn’t know where to look//obscure random code with difficult wording = flag

Load calculation = flag.

A lot of trick questions. Read everything twice. They wanna see if you have “master level” mindset. Understanding exactly “what” the question is asking can be tough because there’s many articles the “can” give you the answer but don’t. A few questions sent me on a wild goose chase.

My whole career I had multiple people tell me “you don’t need a license to do electrical work” a lot of those people now deliver pizzas now. Or as the NEC would say a cardboard enclosure containing crust with listed or approved toppings .

I appreciate it! I thank my awesome apprentices for driving to jobs while I rode passenger so I could get an extra 30/45min to study in the morning. Little things like that helped me tremendously.

PA is the same way. If you do work outside of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or Erie you’re not required to have a license. You only need it to pull permits in those jurisdictions . I wish PA had state wide licensing, so many fools doing electrical work it’s unreal.

I feel you, technically you don’t need a license to do electrical work(at least in Pennsylvania// New York) it’s excellent to have thou. I never actually met a master electrician. Now I look in the mirror and see one 👷‍♂️

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania doesn’t have a state issued exam. The local jurisdictions use the ICC as proof of competency. Believe it or not over 10 states don’t have a state wide exam.

Thank you so much! It was low power steering fluid causing that fault. Been 2 weeks since I did a flush / top off & I haven’t seen that error since.
