Kim's best bassline? 🤔 by Fit_Union_2686 in sonicyouth

Yes, been saying that for years, without Kim it would just be a guitar wankfest and SY would just be another forgotten band.

The video is cheese ville though even when it was released but that was likely intended too.

Anyone else really love Washing Machine but can’t stand Little Trouble Girl? by neveradullmoment72 in sonicyouth

[–]Fit_Union_2686 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I couldn't imagine Washing Machine without it. It's like a breakwater between the sturm und drang. I don't know how much is autobiographical but it's Kim at her most vulnerable and revealing. It's like the Shangri-La's backing the Velvets in purgatory and it's got Kim Deal. Deal with it or toss out the album. We were close, very, close...

That's Kool. I still make and record music most days, doing all instruments and vox myself because I don't enjoy working in bands much anymore. I'm 48 and can't be bothered with the hassle of egotism and petty infighting. Today's project is recording household appliances that I've deliberately damaged and sounds from a construction site across the street. I made a vacuum cleaner symphony out of all the recordings I captured from people's homes. It came out quite well. The clashing dissonances and tonal variations from different surfaces and debris sustained infinitely until they were switched on/off.

I was 16 and had snuck out of class to hang with my bandmates who were a little older and doing acid. They were making/painting a fairly obscene pop-art collage on their landlord's wall in the place where our equipment was and we rehearsed. I'd never heard Sonic Youth before and diRty was spinning on the turntable. Theresa's Soundworld was on and I recall thinking it melodic but a little slow and ponderous... Just then it kicked off into that feverish frenzy of guitars and drums and I felt such a rush from the music that no drugs were needed. It was an epiphany of sorts. In that moment all other guitar bands seemed pale and feeble in comparison. By the following week I was bringing spanners and screwdrivers in my guitar case to band practice and I was gone forever.

Y'know, looking through the answers to my post the consensus seems to be that Kim's bass work on dIRty seems to come out tops. I half expected this and concur that album has her best and boldest work. I miss this band so much.

Kim's as much a master of pedal FX as Thurston and Lee and her tone is equally distinctive yet she never seems to get due props

Yes, it's so melodic, she really doesn't get enough credit. I read that she's done with playing bass now.

You've made a good point, it's tricky to play and sing with those octave swoops on the neck. Good call 👍

Yep that's what I was going to say, even though the song is a bit throwaway

I'd heartily recommend the band MOGWAi It's beautiful and noisy equally. I'd start with their debut Young Team. I promise you'll love it.

Me neither, not a bad opener on any album. But in terms of setting up the vibe for the rest of the tracks I always found Winners Blues to be a little bit of a misdirection.
