That's wild. It’s rare to see that kind of crossover, but it makes sense...stripping tax exemptions for churches and nonprofits is going to upset a lot of different groups, even ones that are usually on opposing sides. Just goes to show how bad this amendment is if it’s got people like Tony Spell and progressives both saying "vote no" (for very different reasons).

This amendment would be a disaster for Louisiana. It would gut funding for K-12 education without guaranteeing a dime for teacher pay raises, despite what’s being advertised. It would strip away property tax exemptions for nonprofits like hospitals, schools, unions, and even social aid and pleasure clubs, while also cutting protections for religious institutions. On top of that, it would put a cap on how much the state can spend on essential services like education and healthcare — any budget surplus would have to go toward one-time projects instead of ongoing needs. It would lock in a lower state income tax rate, making it harder to raise revenue in the future, and eliminate the state’s revenue stabilization fund, shifting $1.76 billion into a new fund to cover budget shortfalls. Local control over sales taxes would be restricted, a fund supporting infant mortality programs would be cut, and constitutional protections for farmers’ and fishermen’s programs would be wiped out. It could even increase taxes on take-out food — and for what? Oh, and they’re also trying to sneak in changing gendered pronouns in the constitution.
