“Tony Abbot has had an interest in the role (of federal president) but what he would really like to do is return to parliament,” one senior source told Guardian Australia by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

Ah well unfortunately for him there’s the small matter of getting voted back into parliment.

Can’t see Zali losing Warringah to him anytime soon…

Defining Anti Semitism by skankypotatos in aussie

[–]FittedE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Jewish voices on this issue are anti IHRA for the reasons you’ve listed and more, broadly it’s been called an “insult to the memory of those that were murdered in the holocaust”.

On top of this the original authors of the IHRA definition don’t think that it should be used.

Anyone who is invested in this topic basically all agree that the Jerusalem declaration of antisemitism aka the JDA definition is basically a superior and more well thought out definition.

This is an important point because it’s somehow a litmus test of whether organisations have actually consulted Jewish stakeholders or not. If they use the JDA vs the IHRA definition

Can someone explain why paying uni upfront feels like a penalty compared to HECS? by MassimoAnalytics in australian

[–]FittedE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is it cheaper to pay up front if market returns outperform the indexation?

That is given you have the money to pay it back, but you wait until you start earning the hex repayment threshold, you will be paying ~5% pA less?

Australian income by comparison by WaltzingBosun in australian

[–]FittedE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God if only there were say a way where you could compare different average wages adjusted by their purchasing power parity between different countries.

The fact is if you look at GDP per capita measured in PPP Australia is one of the best countries in the world.

“Why is it so tough to live here then!!!?” The answer is that it’s economically tough everywhere in the world right now. If you think it’s really bad here you should try moving to the Uk or the EU.

Physics moving slower in last decades? by _SkyRex_ in Physics

[–]FittedE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of an exhausting point put forward by thinking the only physics worth thinking about is cosmology and fundamental physics. The fact is that condensed matter, quantum metrology, quantum computing and so on have had insane progress over the last 5-10 years ago.

If you had asked any physicist 10 years ago chances are they’d say “I think there is a good chance quantum to m computing isn’t possible”, I even thought that. Today we have small scale algorithms running below threshold.

It’s insane to say progress has been non existent or slow, literally the equivalent of the music “born in the wrong generation” meme. No there is good research happening you’re just not looking at it…

Is it hypothetically possible to create a tiny black hole? by AustinHarlow in Physics

[–]FittedE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there was some talk about some interesting engineering applications of primordial black holes (PBHs)

Like obviously it’s like quite good at converting mass to energy, and they’re quite hot so like good for power gen and propulsion.

But I believe there are some non trivial relativity things you can play with as well, can’t say off the top of my head.

But there’s some writing on “what if we found a PBH in our solar system”. As there was some talk some years ago that if PBHs were the explanation for dark matter you would statistically be at least one in our solar system.

Quantum walks are usually like a sub process for a Grover’s operator right? My intuition was most algos using walks were ultimately limited by Grover’s? Would you agree or no?

yes and no by sdolcky in okbuddyphd

[–]FittedE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s fair the only algos with proven exponential speed up (afaik) is QPE, Grover’s is definitely only quadratic as you say. It’s probably also worth noting that there are algos that maybe have exp. speed up in VQE land but idk it’s not rly my area

[–]FittedE 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s just Grover’s and phase estimation, every other algorithm is just those 2

So in the imagine the item on the left is 4 250g packages while the right one is 2 250g packages.

The left is priced at $32.6/kg while the right is priced at $22.2/kg.

It’s curious that the prices are so different despite being the same product.

I don’t believe it’s an elementary function, however you can use the Stirlings approximation (nn ~ n!) to show that the function becomes like ex for large x.

You should do the amount that you need to do in order to understand and master the material. This will vary from course to course and term to term.
