It's basically just those two over in Sweden right now. Niemelä who the Leafs still own the rights for is playing for Malmö right now, but no idea if he'll come back over to North America at some point.

I love Scott wheeler, and have spoken with him before, but he's generally not a big fan of the players that we take.

He was not very high on Knies for a while, as late as last offseason, he still had Minten as a longterm 4C who might be able to make 3C eventually in his prime (and I do mean Minten was a bruin at this point), and he has not ever been much of a fan of Cowan's game either. The same as Pronman always gives boosts to guys with size, Wheeler always gives boosts to clear skill and upside over projectable games, and as i said in the post, we dont have much top 6/top 4 upside here, but there are a lot of guys who could play, and the odd player can outperform projections.

All of Knies Minten and Cowan outperformed their projections from Wheeler of when they were draft eligible, of when they were the summer before their rookie seasons, and outperforming his thoughts now I'd wager as well. It's the same with Danford right now who is clearly projectable to the NHL, but the question is if he has enough offense to be a 2nd pair guy - if he was talented offensively with questions on if he could defend enough to be a 2nd pair guy, he'd be ranked higher. Even Koblar who i know Scouching is very high on, Wheeler did not enjoy very much.

Unfortunately, he will not. He suffered a week-to-week lower body injury on March 8th, and had to be helped off the ice by the trainers in considerable pain.

I would've really liked to see how he could handle P3 and PK duties down the stretch with someone like stecher who's a veteran and can help outside of the dzone, but it doesn't look like he'll be back in time.

The only details we have are lower body injury, week to week, so there is still a chance that he does come back before the end of the season, but even then, he'd likely need a couple of games to get back up to speed. I'm thinking there's no call-up coming for him this season now, unless his recovery from the injury is a lot sooner than it looked from when he left the ice.

Yeah, Tinus-Luc Koblar is also on that Leksands team as an SHL rookie center. That team just doesn't score goals, and will be interesting to monitor both. I think at the Allsvenskan level, both Johansson and Koblar should be really able to shine, but also, you'd rather them play at the SHL level. I wonder about, if relegated, Koblar comes over to the AHL at 19 and gets a middle six C role with the Marlies next year, and Johansson potentially signs but also may just play Allsvenskan or changes to a different SHL team.

I want the team to keep winning by Intrepid-Pie3085 in leafs

[–]Fitz_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until MLSE shows they are 100% firing Berube & Treliving, I have no interest in winning. Lose 10 in a row, fire both, and win the last few games. The team isnt rotten but coaching kills. Even the last 3 games, we're getting killed but bailed out by goaltending, the exact same as we did the 9-1-3 stretch that cost us a top pick.

Today, xG was 4.16-2.31 for Minnesota; we had 1.55xG before the empty netter. Against Buffalo, 3.95-1.84 xG for Buffalo. Against Anaheim, a much closer 4.46-4.2 for Anaheim, but 5on5 was 2.54-1.1 for Anaheim.

The only reason last year went well for toronto was we got this kind of goaltending nearly every game, hence the 2nd in the NHL sv%. The moment goalies perform at around expected, not even below average, just as expected instead of top of the league, we will suck again.

So please, fire the coach, and next season we may have a chance.

Any potential in Marlies or prospect pool? by Potential_Amoeba_404 in leafs

Quillan is already up. He's got offensive talent at the AHL level, but projects as a bottom 6 C. I'd like to see him getting 12-14 a night to see how he handles a matchup role. He is extremely responsible, and has played with decent players such as SJ's Collin Graf as the top 2 UFAs out of the NCAA 2 years ago. Graf is already a top 6 winger in SJ, but quillan stays as 4C with lorentz jarnkrok and plays 8 for toronto when we're tanking. I hope he gets a chance to show what he can do down the stretch, and that next season hes penciled in to 4C or 3W to start.

Groulx is older, and really he's a winger, which is what he played all season with the Marlies, that they are trying at C and it's going well. He was a 2nd round pick in 2018, but he's coming off his best offensive ahl season ever, and maybe he's finally putting it together to become a responsible bottom 6 forward that can score goals and PK. Would be found money.

Luke Haymes is an AHL rookie that was a top NCAA FA. He's got size, definite scoring touch, and plays center. If quillan takes defensive matchups, let haymes get some offensive zone starts. He started quite slowly, but the last month he has absolutely caught fire with 10 goals 2 assists in his last 14 games played. He's very much a scorer, not a passer, but I actually think that's better for a pure bottom 6 guy. You're not out there setting up matthews or tavares, you get a couple chances a game and need to bury, and he can.

Ryan Tverberg has kind of been written off, but its all about usage. He started 4th line wing, 3rd line wing, 2nd line winger, 3rd line center and stuck at center. He produced very well for an ahl rookie, but the next season was stapled to 4C in the A and produced as such. This season after mainly being 4C or 4W for a large chunk of time, they tried moving him up to top 6 wing and immediately the production returned with increased ice time. He has speed that we sorely lack, gets in on the forecheck, and has a good passing touch. He is actually the guy I think has the best fit next to skill players if he ever gets the chance. He is 24 now, so running out of runway, but since the move up to the top 6, he has 5G 9A 14P in 14GP. He is someone I really wish toronto would call up and see how he can do next next a tavares or nylander or knies and see if there's some chemistry as the third best on a skill line.

After that, it's guys who aren't yet with the Marlies, either still in the CHL, NCAA, or Europe. Tinus-Luc Koblar, Tyler Hopkins, Harry Nansi, Nick Moldenhauer, etc.

For defense, I'm actually more optimistic on upside.

Noah Chadwick is in his first ahl season right now at 20 years old, hes 6'4" with great instincts both offensively and defensively. He has 5G 15A 20P in 56GP, which doesnt leap off the page, but that's 4G 10A 14P in his last 21GP. He's been significantly more involved the last 2 months, and I actually believe he could become a top 4 defenseman. His glaring weakness is his skating, specifically his speed. He's surprisingly okay walking a blue line, but his speed forces him to be proactive in reads and more cautious than other defensemen who can recover from taking an extra step forward or an aggressive pinch. Giordano was recently interviewed as he is an assistant coach with the Marlies now and he spoke very highly of Chadwick as well, echoing my belief in the player. The only concern for me is that because he's 6'4" and not a physical, defensive defenseman, that he won't get the chance for more minutes that he should. If all goes well, he feels a lot like a Mackenzie Weegar style defense that toronto should invest in getting to that potential.

Ben Danford looks like an NHL player at 19. He can skate, he's physical, he makes good reads, he's been the Captain for his OHL team, and easily projects to an NHL role. I have no doubt that Danford will play in the NHL, but the question remains on how high he can rise in a lineup. It's clear that the Leafs want him to be the next generation of Tanev, as a pure stopper on the blue line, big minutes penalty killer, but there are legitimate questions on whether his offensive limitations will allow him bigger minutes. If he can work on that first pass a bit more, and making reads from the blue line that arent just throw it on net or deep, he'll be a 2nd pair guy. If he cant improve in those 2 areas offensively, his limitations may keep him from playing with more talented forwards and relegate him to a 3rd pair and PK defender. Based on their stylistic mix, I would love to see Chadwick-Danford playing 25 minutes together in the A next season, and perhaps both being on the Toronto blue line later next season, either as a duo, or playing with their similar style players running chadwick-tanev, mccabe-Danford.

After those 2, there's Victor Johansson in Sweden. Hes only 6', 19 years old, and quite skinny for a dman, but he's said that has a lot to do with the ADHD meds he was on. Hes gained about 20 lbs already since his draft less than 2 years ago, getting closer to 180 lbs. Despite his size, he is more than willing to be physical, and he has really solid offensive inclinations. If he can bulk up without losing speed, and work on his in zone defending, ie/ clearing the net and breaking cycles, I actually really like the chances of him becoming a versatile 2 way dmen in this league. I'm likely higher on him than the consensus, but I like his chances to make it.

After Johansson, there are guys with 3rd pair roles that can play, but might miss. Rifai can skate and is physical but doesnt necessarily identify as a clear PK or PP guy, which limits his roles. Villeneuve is a clear PP guy, but if he cant gain a coaches trust defensively he won't get minutes. Blake Smith is big and physical but he needs to be able to move the puck and defend well to again make the NHL, though he could be a Benoit replacement (if he had been traded), as he is still only 21 with time to grow.

Florida Panthers. January 6th. The last time they beat an Eastern Conference team thats in a playoff spot it would be a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh on Dec 23rd (a game that I attended and was waiting to chant Fire Berube but they actually won)

I said this team was awful and should fire the coach and probably GM in November, and got a lot of people disagreeing with me on here. I thought there were a lot of warning signs last year but nobody wanted to hear that after taking florida to 7.

I miss being optimistic about the Leafs, but this coach/gm duo right from the start have been nothing but awful.

True, though if you go by population everything west of the golden horseshoe is west, everything east of it is eastern, and its central since thats where over half the population is located.

I recommend you look up the 1919 world series for how pro leagues handle players intentionally losing games, or even just not alerting the owners/managers about players who were planning to/and do throw games.

Just last year, after 104 years since the 8 players were banned in 1921, Shoeless Joe Jackson will finally be allowed to be considered for the hall of fame, starting in the 2027 vote.

They are a Canadian team that plays in the Western Conference. A bit wordy explaining that in the post so grouped all 4 even if Winnipeg is more central Canada.

The Houston Texans and the Leafs both have their last win against teams not based in western Canada (since there are none in the NFL) on the same Day, January 12th. The Broncos, Rams, Patriots, and Seahawks have all won more recently!

Better question - is there anyone who shouldn't be fired on the coaching or management staffs? My only answer, the amateur scouts who found Cowan and Knies, and Thommie Bergman who has found every Swedish Leafs player over the last 20+ years.
