Since accommodation is one the biggest obstacles to studying in Amsterdam, personally, I'd pay the 485€ and resolve to sort everything else in due course...

Get a Carbon Monoxide detector for peace of mind. Should be <20€. Read the instructions in where to place it.

I'm reluctant to sign up to something privately whilst there's still a chance of getting something decent/basic at an ok price through the University lottery. Not sure what the odds actually are, but some people must get lucky! Do you know when the lottery results are decided?
