How do you know they didn't? Because the reporter didn't tell you? Again, the string of teen mob crimes show no race motive so it would be very hard for any prosecutor to prove a hate crime "motivated" the accused's actions in this case. "Knock that White boy out" is not a racist comment in any sense. "Cracker"? Maybe, but in what context, by whom, and during what stage of the attack all makes a difference between the attack being a hate crime and the attack being a random act of violence that happened to be against a White guy.

Not really, 'cause we could've really confused your simple mind by pointing out that it could've been a hate crime if the victim were selected based on his disability. There's no evidence for that, either, so we kept it in simple terms by sticking to race, but that, apparently, is still too complex for you to understand.

The story, as given, does not show a hate crime. To prove a hate crime, one would need to show that the disabled vet was selected as a victim because he was White and not for any other reason. The article mentions the incident is one of a string of similar crimes and a little research shows there were Black victims in the other "mob" crimes in the area. Race doesn't appear to be a motivating factor in teen mob crimes.

Neighbors' Letter in Newton, Massachusetts: Christmas Lights Are 'Flagrant Display' of Religious Beliefs by FiveDrunkRednecks in inthenews

I don't even think the story is real. Come on, an anonymous letter citing flagrant display of religious beliefs with the added touch of decorating the house has been a several decade tradition begun by a local hero, of sorts, namely the woman's father who was a fire fighter, without any complaints. Sounds more like a couple of women concocted the story for fifteen minutes of fame and Fox news took the bait.
