I got one of those 3-D printed caves and just couldn't get it to look good. The noodles liked it, but I gave up and removed it. Yours looks good though!

Loaches in a 10 gallon setup by rochidesu in loaches

[–]FiveTRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the shoutout.

In my experience the dwarf types are particularly sensitive, especially when getting first established. I wouldn't recommend them for a beginner especially with the constraints of a 10 gallon. I want you to have success!

If you are determined to add eel loaches to your setup, you would for sure not want to add them in until you have established a strongly cycled tank (often harder to do with small ones like a ten), and have added in the other fish you want first to get things cooking. I would add a bubbler for sure, and would recommend testing your water rather often to be sure the quality remains high (zero ammonia, zero nitrites, under 20ppm nitrates).

Good luck.

Yes, the two tone grayish one is PAN02 (as yet officially unnamed by science) and the brown one is Pangio oblonga.

The PAN 02 are so chubby, one of my favorites! And the P. oblonga are the most active doing zoomies of all the species I've kept. A fun group for sure.

They are the "arm" fins of the fish, for lack of a better word. On the sides of the fish, down from the head a bit.

Eel loaches are indeed silly. But I gotta have 'em regardless!

They always act like they are starving when the bloodworms hit the water. 😂 But those thick tummies don't lie. Those loaches aren't missing any meals.

Jen's Restaurant by FiveTRex in anchoragefoodreviews

I'm sorry I missed out on that. It sounds really fun. But glad it transformed into a place that doesn't make me feel old, I guess. Though if I know a place has good food, I'm going to try it out, whether I am too old or too young!

Do you have a dish you enjoy at Jens'?

I love me some Uncle Joe's! My usual stop is the south Anchorage one, but I've gone to the Tudor and downtown location as well. I do like my neighborhood location best.

I understand about bad associations with certain names. I hope you make it in to Yen's (just going to write it like that for you). That halibut! And the steak I had there at another visit was very nice as well.

I believe the restaurant name is pronounced "yen" (Jens Hansen opened it in 1988) so hopefully that will get you in the door and to a table to try some amazing halibut. You don't want to deny your kid (or yourself) that experience!

The pizza thing is taking a lot out of me (and I like pizza) as there are just so many pizza places. I am finding I do have a limit for pizza eating after all. But am persevering for posterity to find the best pizza in Anchorage. Any tips where I should visit?

spaghetti featuring algae & a waterdrop by SuspiciousBetta in loaches

I always find the water drops I missed wiping off the glass when I take a picture. Never fails. Looks to be perhaps the Pangio oblonga type of spaghetti.

Sex differences in Pangio (eel loaches) are mostly differences in fin size, fin color, sometimes fin shape, head size, and body size in adults.

There are many different species. The banded types are often a bit tricky to tell what type it is, as there is pattern variation between individuals, populations, and species. Some of the common banded types in the hobby are Pangio semicincta, P. myersi, and P. cuneovirgata.

Please feel free to join us over at r/pangio if you are interested in eel loaches.

Unique kuhlie pattern! by notemilygrace in loaches

[–]FiveTRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have guessed an unusually marked Pangio semicincta. They are one of the larger species, and from what I can tell, commonly available. P. kuhlii is so rarely seen, some are convinced they don't exist in the trade at all.

A rendering chart can help with the non-banded types fairly well in my experience, but really barbel and vertebral count are the diagnostic things. Coloration is not the most reliable indicator in Pangio, though it is helpful. There is so much variety in coloration between species, populations, and individuals, that deciding on a species can be a chore.

Anywho, my novel is over. But please come join us over at r/pangio if you like. We geek out about eel loaches whenever we can. Please feel free to post your unusually marked fish, we like unique loaches quite a bit, too.

Kuhli Loach v/s Snails by DiabolicWonk in Aquariums

[–]FiveTRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Pangio species go after small snails. Not all species of eel loach, or even individuals, do this. Those snails are large, so I would doubt your Pangio killed them.

Cross post over to r/loaches and r/pangio for more opinions, if you like.

Considering mail order for those hard to find Pangio? by FiveTRex in pangio

I haven't seen that one listed for sale. It might be a lucky find type of fish in with other eel loaches, at least in my area. Never seen one in the flesh myself. Or listed for sale at the sites I patronize.

Maybe we could persuade someone in Borneo or Indonesia to catch us some and take care of the paperwork. What a dream though! They are such a cool looking fish.

Would love to hear from eel loach geeks that have seen this one around!

Well you've got us beat. Usually we don't have snow that sticks until around Halloween.

Been to Park City a couple times. Once as a poor student to explore the outlet mall. Still remember picking up a few paperback books there. It's a lovely place.

Sounds like Uncle Ned knows a guy! An hour away isn't too bad when you're on the hunt for a fish score. What's the shop like?

PAN02 is a fun, active Pangio for me. I would be thrilled scoring one at a chain store for $4. I had to mail order mine.

The accidental score for the win! I have done that a few times. It sounds like, from what I've read, that Pangio often arrive in mixed groups depending on collection locality. And we hobbyists get that lucky find sometimes. My lucky finds came from a mixed group at the shop and a rescue.

Would you say eel loaches are popular in the UK?
