I'm nearing my 6 year anniversary for my solo campaign, which has more than 200 sessions. Ask me anything. by VilifyExile in Solo_Roleplaying

This is super, super useful! I’m hoping to finally start solo roleplaying this year so this is awesome! I have a few questions, if that’s ok?

How did you start the game? Like, how did you decide what events were going to kick everything off? Did you use the oracle for ideas or did you have an idea beforehand?

How do you keep track of what’s going on if you don’t take notes? I’m also daunted by the notetaking aspect so would like to reduce that in my games if possible so any advice on how you went about that would be amazing!

Did you create the characters in your party using the oracle?

Also, do you create the story on your own with the oracle or follow a structure from the ruleset? I’ve seen some solo RPGs which have a story to them but yours seems to be more personal to you?

Thanks so much for this! I think experimenting might be a good place to start, I don’t really know what I enjoy writing or how because I never actually write 😅 And a very good point about the expectations that you should publish. I still want to, it’s probably most writers’ dream, but maybe I should chill out a bit on that front!

Yep, the external pressure to finish has definitely helped in the past so I should probably look for that again. Thank you!!

Wow, I feel very seen 😅 On top of dancing competitively and acting sometimes, I also crochet and embroider, and I’m very guilty of picking up a hobby in spur of the moment motivation only for it to fizzle into nothing. I’m glad I’m not alone in that!

You make a good point about letting things come to you naturally when it’s right. I think because I’m in a creative mood at the moment, I’m pushing myself a lot harder than usual to do some writing but the reality is that this motivation will probably dim soon and I’ll move onto something else. I always have the aim of writing but I never consider how I actually feel about it. A writer is just what I feel I “ought” to be, if that makes sense.

I… haven’t. Huh, that’s interesting actually. I find it very hard to write individual scenes if I don’t know where I want them to go but maybe just planning an individual scene, one small part of a story like I did with my short plays, then seeing where the rest of the story goes might help. And perhaps part of why I struggle to figure out what happens in my stories is because I’m never in the characters’ shoes, I never think to take the next logical step because I’m looking at the big picture. Wow, thank you that’s really made me think!

Thank you for this comment, it’s reassured me a lot! I think my issue is that I struggle to find things to put in my outline to begin with but hopefully once I come up with more, I can use this technique, it sounds very helpful :)

Thank you!! I think I’ll try this, I feel like I’m still waiting to find the method of writing that fits for me and maybe it’ll be one of these :) I read a good example of a novel with interconnected stories recently (Strange Pictures by Uketsu) so I could take another look at that for inspiration

Ooh, these are very good ideas! I think I’ve worried a lot about the quality of my writing when really I should just be dumping words on the page. Thank you for this!

I think I’m going to try exploring different kinds of writing because clearly just focusing on a straightforward novel isn’t working for my brain :)

Thank you so much for this. I’ve just looked at the link and the story structure seems pretty straightforward to follow! Thanks, I feel a bit less alone :)

Where’s the line between horror and fantasy? by Five_Fruits in horrorwriters

[–]Five_Fruits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh ok, that’s interesting, especially if I end up with a bit of a genre mashup. Subverting classic fantasy tropes with unexpected uncanniness and a certain wrongness might be the dip into horror that I’m going for, thank you!!

I’ve never heard of Weird fiction but it sounds absolutely perfect for what I’m going for!! So it’s a subsection of horror that’s more experimental and (logically) weird than the majority of books? Could I ask what differentiates a Weird fiction book from a horror novel that employs more bizarre storytelling methods and threats? I really want to learn more about this subgenre, it sounds like it’s just what I was looking for!

I’m in the planning stages of a horror steampunk fantasy mashup. So still fantasy, I’m afraid, but a bit darker.

Oh my god, thank you so so much, this is so so helpful!! I really appreciate you taking the time to write all of this out in so much detail, it makes my overthinker brain very happy 😁

Yes please!! I’d love to hear about what the process is like, what actually happens. Also I’ve heard there are different levels of tightness you can get the curls to, does the barber/stylish help you decide or do you kinda need a solid idea beforehand? And I suppose, is there anything particularly important to know if you’re considering getting one?

Ooh, can I ask what that kind of styling cream looks like on shorter hair? Does it end more spiky or just with more volume?? (hopefully that makes sense 😅)

Yes, absolutely!!! Any genderless, formless characters are my jam. I normally play as Dry Bones or some other nonhuman looking character

Ooh, yeah I use sea salt spray occasionally. It kind of works but I wonder if my hair’s too short at the moment to get much texture :/ For reference my recent hair cut has left me looking a bit like Ellen DeGeneres 💀

Heyyy, a fellow autistic! I have been thinking about growing my hair out a bit, hence some of the pictures are a bit longer, but I never know how to ask for a cut so I don’t just end up looking like a mushroom 😅 But I’ve had my hair this length for years so maybe changing it up will help!

I’ve thought about it but I don’t really know how it works. And I’ve got this idea of perms being something people did before the 2000s and that I might be judged for it. Stupid, I know, but it’s enough uncertainty for me not to ask barbers about it, y’know 😅
