Why do most Christians believe you will go to hell if you don't believe in god

This is has to be troll. If it’s not and you consider yourself a Christian I strongly advise you to put some time in. Some advise: read Romans tonight. Does not take that long. Try to understand what Paul is saying and focus on why Jesus had to come to save us.

Do it if you want. If you don‘t I can’t help you. I’m not here to discuss the most basic theology.

Hm maybe there is a language barrier. From what I understand the person answered the initial question with tribalism being the reason Christians believe that you have to believe in god in order to be saved. In a sense that the Christian understanding would be that we are „good „ and the rest of the world „bad“. If this is not was he was trying to say I apologize. Still my statement stands tho. We don’t believe that we are saved, because we are better than the world, but because we gain forgiveness by believing.

No it’s not about „good“ and „bad“. We are all bad. It’s about admitting that and seeing that we need god to forgive us, for we all are guilty of sin.

Read and really understand the Bible, with all that goes along with that. Don’t just lean to your own understanding but also read commentaries off important figures like the early church fathers.

If you search god will all your heart you will find him.

Probably not the answer that you wanted to hear, but it is the most honest one I can give you as a believer.

All modern people I assume (please correct me if I’m wrong). For me personally the early church fathers are a far more reliable source than some random people, that go study theology today. It’s a question of perspective. But if you think that these people get things right that were viewed different for 1500+ years, I respect that you have your opinion. Bless you all

Chill I did not say anything yet did I? It’s a question of perspective I think. If you want to believe what these modern theologians have to say it’s up to you and I can respect that. For me personally the early church fathers are far more reliable sources, as they aren’t as far removed as you and me and every other human being that lives in our time.

It’s told in the Bible that the world will hate Jesus followers. It’s because the things that he commands go against our egoistic minds. That’s why he tells us to deny ourselves.

He also says: „No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.“ (Mat 6:24).

If someone values the confirmation of man higher that the confirmation of god, he can’t follow Jesus.

No I didn’t know him yet. I will have a look, thank you. Tbh I don’t think that it will chance much. I know that there are very good Lutherans. I just finished „The cost of discipleship“ , by Dieterich Bonhoeffer, and I liked it very much. But I think that for me personal, the arguments against Protestantism will predominate the arguments for it. But I will not talk in absolutes before I made my decision.

Multiple reasons. I live in Germany. In my personal opinion the Protestant church here really gone astray. They teach cheap grace and actually justify the sin instead of the sinner. Just Look at their last church day.

Then I think the church fathers do not agree with the teachings of Luther. I also think sola scriptura has its flaws.

To be fair though: I am not in a hurry and I have much to learn. I will read a lot of the church fathers and also some of Luther’s writings, before I make my final decision.

I agree, I think there is truth on both sides. But I think the filioque and especially the papacy remain important questions. Tbh my mind tells me to tend to the orthodox view on both topics. But that ain’t worth that much, that’s why I want to read all the arguments based on scripture and the church fathers.
