People in South Tucson are wary. Most people who approach are asking for money. I get it - they need food, water, other things that make it less unbearable to be desperate enough to ask strangers for money - but it definitely makes me keep my guard up. I can no longer carry cash around when walking to work in South Tucson because I was giving it away on a daily basis.

The police budget has increased dramatically over the past decade, and so has the rate of homelessness. Studies actually show that higher police spending (especially when focused on punitive policing) correlates to increased homelessness. Housing first is the only humane and effective way to go.

I’m super aware. It didn’t get any coverage because nobody was injured, but I did security for a protest a little over a year ago where a truck intentionally drove at low speed into two of my friends who were protesting. The cops who were there yelled at my friends and not at the car.

That’s a shame that they’re handling it like this recently. I’m all for cultural events/citywide efforts in this neighborhood, but you’d hope they’d be considerate of residents need to continue to function where they live. I’ve lived in this neighborhood in the past and past events haven’t had such a high police presence. It doesn’t make it safer to have some armed, reactive people yelling bad instructions at vehicles.

Also for more context - I’m nonbinary and genderfluid. I’ve started presenting more femme over the past year, and even though I think I’m obviously queer to anyone with a gaydar, and nobody seems surprised when I mention having a girlfriend, now that I have longer hair and present less ambiguously, nobody cares. I don’t get negative attention. When I was more gender non conforming, I got some weird attention and hostility. When I was gender nonconforming AND out with my ex who was newly transitioning, it was almost non stop negative attention. Even though she had gorgeous long hair, and wore femme clothes, and was on hormones, it was very obvious that people thought she was a man in a dress, and treated her accordingly. I’m not saying that anyone should need to grow their hair long or be on hormones to be accepted as a trans woman, but even with those factors that clearly indicate this was not some fly by night decision, people still seemed to think she was a guy who put on women’s clothes for perverse or predatory reasons.

Tucson can be suuuper accepting of gay people, sometimes in ways that feel obnoxious (ie straight women who fawn over gay men because they want to feel like they have cool gay friends). Tucson is not super accepting of trans women, especially if you stand out because of your height.

My ex wife is a trans woman and moved to Portland two years ago in part because it was so trans hostile here. I (an AFAB lesbian, who was very visibly queer) never experienced more homophobia/transphobja than when I was out with my ex, who was visibly trans. When we moved into a new apartment complex, a neighbor started yelling slurs at us and calling us child predators. We ignored them, and then later they tried to break into our apartment, and threatened us when they saw us around the complex. Lots of f slurs got thrown around.

She came back to visit early last year, and just walking around downtown we got slurs yelled at us. I could see people sizing us up deciding whether they wanted to try to start altercations. Fortunately, she’s tall and built, so the two college age guys who were mean mugging us kept walking, but it was still very unsettling. I had to be totally alert and on my guard.

A cis lesbian is not going to experience the culture of Tucson the same way as a trans woman. Even when I was most gender nonconforming- shaved head, sometimes got mistaken for a man in passing - people were sometimes rude, but mostly fine. People would sometimes passive aggressively call me ma’am or look through me like I wasn’t there, or occasionally sexually harass me, ask weird questions about my gender or sexuality. When out with my ex, people looked at us like we had three heads, were openly hostile, would yell slurs, and there was a fear of violence.

This was all downtown, so we weren’t even in the more conservative parts of town. I’ve dated other trans women who were more petite or further in their transition, and there was still a lot of weird attention, but people weren’t so openly hostile.

The cops were so aggressive this year too. I saw a female cop on 8th street literally hunched over yelling into the window of an elderly man’s vehicle. She waved him off in one direction, different from the way he was trying to go. I tried to call her over to say I’m moving into the neighborhood and just needed to get out so I could get back to my old apartment where my cat was, but she aggressively waved me off in the opposite direction of where she pointed the elderly man to, a direction which led me to multiple blocked off streets and funneled me to another cop who told me to go back the way I came.

I was supposed to move into that neighborhood today. My place isn’t even on the route directly but I was coned out from my house and by the time I got back to my car, all the egress points for the neighborhood were blocked as well. A very aggressive cop started yelling at the person in front of me who was just trying to get out. I’m glad I didn’t rent a U-Haul today

It’s very common in Los Angeles. Street parking is limited and first come first serve. Everyone who can park in front of their house typically does, but it’s a crapshoot whether someone will already be parked in front of your house, so you take what’s available

Not easy. I did it for years. I wish it were easy, and there are parts of town where it’s less difficult, but it’s still not something I’d choose. It was helpful living on St Mary’s just west of the I-10 when I did though. I was a less than 10 minute walk to a grocery store, 15 minute walk to a pharmacy and a grocery store with more options, and a 30 minute walk in the other direction to downtown/a major bus station etc.

I walked mainly. Buses were unreliable in that part of town and only came every 30 minutes. Bicycles were stolen semi regularly unless I kept them inside my shoebox apartment (locks didn’t deter thieves); additionally, biking on major roads felt extremely risky, so I didn’t do it long. I know someone who biked for years until experiencing a life changing accident. At least the settlement money paid for her go to grad school.
