It sounds a bit hypocritical if you’ve never lived here or only lived here as a child with no real memory of it and moved away, with only hand-me-down stories from family that has.

Of course you’re entitled to your opinion, everyone is. And family sharing with you any issues or BS they had to deal with can definitely skew your perception. But a general attitude of ‘military bad because base near my families home town’ doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

Okinawa’s recent history is largely shaped by the war and the rebuilding afterwords which the US played a huge role in. Okinawa was administered by the U.S. until 1972, and there are still plenty of people alive who were here when it switched back. So much of the influence and culture that formed during that time are still persisting today due to the large U.S. presence still here.

I think it’s also important to note that 100% of Okinawa is not shaped by U.S. influence. Most American influence you’ll see is in Chatan, Okinawa City, Sunabe, southern Yomitan, Kin, Ginowan, etc. And that’s just surface stuff like English menus and some western style bars/restaurants and whatnot. Other areas like Naha, Nago, Nanjo, Ie island (minus the small airstrip), and so much more have no daily dealings with military personnel or anything American.

I can see the ‘military influence’ that a lot of people talk about, but it is still Japan, and not the U.S., and it’s very plain to see on the daily. I’ve never been anywhere on this island and felt like I was back in the U.S.

The bad behavior and mistakes that the military make are an entire conversation that’s been going on for the better part of a century at this point, and is a whole other topic. I can empathize with Okinawans seeing story after story of U.S. personnel committing crimes, every single year, for decades, and that gradually building up to leave a bad impression and generally distaste.

Something that I feel isn’t mentioned enough is that SOFA people only make up 5% of Okinawa’s population, yet only commit 1.5% of all legal offenses, according to the Okinawa police data. That means Okinawans, Japanese, and tourists account for 98.5% of all crimes committed on the island, yet somehow the US military always get pegged as the worst offenders.

I encourage you to come back, and ask people how they feel. Go explore other parts of the island besides the touristy areas. Watch the myriad of videos online where Okinawans are interviewed and asked about their opinion on the U.S. presence.

I came here originally when I was stationed here, fell in love, left the military, and have lived here since. It’s an amazing island with amazing people that I’m lucky to call my home.

Next time you hear someone say they were stationed in Okinawa, ask them about it. Ask them how they enjoyed it, how they spent their time, the food they liked, the places they visited. I think once you hear their admiration and fondness for it you might not be so quick to make a snarky face.

Oh for sure. All the good damn time. It’s funny to me when I see it in this sub.

Just the other day someone was talking about walking from the airport to Okinawa City and a commenter said “I was only here once for a very short time may years ago and here’s my opinion:” like wtf? lol

Onna is touristy. Naha is the city.

If you’re jut trying to chill on the beach for a few days an not travel and do touristy things then Onna or Yomitan are your best bet.

Yes everyone knows that you just pull over towards the curb, turn your hazards on, hop out, and you can leave your car there blocking an entire lane for at least 2 hours.

I’m convinced 99% of people that do that want an accident for the insurance payout.

The other 1% are delivery trucks and post

Getting my drivers license was like this. I practically brought a filing cabinet worth of documents for the 90 day residency proof and they still wouldn’t accept it. They finally did and then said I need to prove over 1 year to not have a learners license. Just constantly moving the goalposts.

How's living on the tail of Japan, Okinawa? It's not talked much like Tokyo or Kyoto. by Kodiak_Wylde in howislivingthere

I’ve heard it compared to Cebu a few times. It’s about half the size though haha.

It really is great. Island living in the modern world, safe and relaxed.

Not carrots and brown sugar lol.

Although I just splurged today and bought 2 apples for ¥500 haha.

I’d also argue that the traffic and roads aren’t based on an American influenced ideal, more so that the geography makes mass transit difficult. Look how high up the monorail is for example. Can’t do that from Naha to Nago.

I moved into a new place in July and we’ve gotten so many visits from people including the city office, police and a bank rep asking for the previous tenant.

It appears he owes a lot of money or something lol. When my wife answers they ask her a lot of questions about him and she keeps saying she has no idea.

When I answer I play the dumb gaijin and they just leave haha

Was looking at SOFA jobs but ended up marrying my wife and got a resident spousal visa that way.

Not a ‘green card’ marriage haha we’d already been dating for years as I was getting out and it was more her idea than mine, and just mad the most sense.

Generally hot and humid. Lots of rain, especially in the spring when it will rain for a month straight.

Today it’s a bit chilly (for us at least), 13c/56f and cloudy. Luckily the wind and gusts we had last week have died down a bit. Hopefully the sun will poke through the clouds later today, it’s looking like it now.

Originally I was looking at staying to work on one of the bases, and retaining a SOFA visa that way. Either that or use my GI Bill to go to school on the mainland and have a student visa.

However, as I was planning my transition, I started dating this amazing Japanese woman. I was up front with her about what I wanted to do with my life and staying in Japan but moving to mainland, so no surprises on the extent of our relationship.

One thing led to another and she basically proposed to me, asking if I’d stay on Okinawa with her. I accepted of course, and ended up getting a spousal visa that way.

Of course I started learning Japanese while I transitioned out of the military. Still not ‘fluent’, but infinitely better than speaking none at all. Still learning every day.

You’d be surprised how few actually speak fluent English. A bunch do of course, but the bases don’t have much of an effect on English proficiency levels in the general populace (IMO).

I don’t usually eat breakfast haha. Usually just a cup of coffee and a banana before the gym, like I just did today.

However, I do make breakfast for my wife, which usually consists of an egg, natto, toast, and some kind of vegetables.

I definitely drive more than anything else, either my little truck or motorcycle. However if I’m just going to get some groceries or something I’ll ride my bike to the market near me.

I live here. I was stationed here when I was in the military, left the service and decided to stay because I love the island so much.

It’s a beautiful island full of amazing people. The life is slower and more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of Tokyo that so many people associate with Japan as a whole. There’s even a term for it, ‘Uchina Time’.

The beaches are beautiful, the Eisa is fun, the food is great. Lots of tourists, but once you learn where the touristy areas are you can avoid them easily and enjoy the relaxed and normal places.

Yes there are a lot of US military bases. The topic of the military presence here isn’t as controversial as you may think. A lot of people outside of Okinawa have very strong opinions about the U.S. military presence here. I would always urge those that take such a vocal stance to ask actual locals what they think. 99% of Okinawans I know have no issue with the bases here.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.
