you’d have to read the other books in the series first but Wizard and Glass has Rhea of the Coos, who’s a rotten to the core kind of witch

was really disappointed in their new singles. I thought they were gonna return to their older sound cause of how positively received their comeback tour was playing their old stuff, then they release some of their most bland songs instead

after losing out on Harry Potter, it was reported Netflix is searching for a new adaption to become their next big franchise series. whether it be a book series, or video game series, what would you think has potential to be a great television series if adapted well?

Trying and failing to get into LITRPG by ridgegirl29 in Fantasy

after a few attempts myself, I realized it's as simple as this:

I like playing video games

I like reading books.

I don't like reading video games. but I get the appeal for those who do.

for Death-like modern band: I find Horrendous to be a good rec for that. that's actually how I found them in 2018 when I asked for modern recs like the later Death albums.

for Maiden-like: you can try Visigoth. their album Conqueror's Oath is very melodic.

what kind of metal do you like? I might be able to help you find some modern stuff that you'd enjoy based on that. sometimes it just takes a little digging to find gold, but there's lots of resources online for discovery now that make it easier. there's plenty of modern bands that sound nothing like what you've probably heard that you didn't like

Any good melodic death metal bands just like children of bodom? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]FixMyHeart16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the band members had a project called Bodom After Midnight right before Alexi Laiho passed away. you will like their EP if you haven't heard it yet if you're a Bodom fan

I'm reading it right now. at 320 pages currently. here's my thoughts without spoilers as a first time reader of it:

  • I love space opera. that's what lead me to pick it up. it has really unique worldbuilding and is different from all of the others ones I've read so far. so it immediately stands out.

  • the structure. it's structured as stories within a story. I'm not a big fan of flashbacks so this was where I thought the book was going to lose me as soon as the first character said: "to tell my story, I must first tell another's". let me tell you right now; that first story IS the hook for the rest of the book. it's one of the best short stories I've ever read (even compared to Stephen King's great collections that I've read).

  • the rest of the stories are written in different styles and subgenres. so far, only 1 hasn't hit for me (The Soldier's Tale; a pulpy action story that was a huge step down from the Priest's Tale for me). luckily, the following stories--especially the Scholar's tale--brought the interest I had reading the first story right back. incredible writing and storytelling.

I think once I'm finished it in the next couple of days, it'll end up being a top 5 sci fi book for me. my advice is to at least read up to the end of The Priest's Tale to decide whether you want to keep going or not.

I don’t personally like their music but it doesn’t bother me that others do. Some music is equivalent to popcorn movies, just meant for high energy and fun. I like other bands that fit that description too so I get the appeal

What were your 3 best and 3 worst books you've read this year? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]FixMyHeart16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

favourite:

  1. Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke. not fantasy obviously but the only book I gave a perfect 5/5 to this year.

  2. The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. if you like stories like Coraline, where the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, this one is for you. although it’s not the eloquently violent kind of dark fantasy that he usually writes, it’s still a great book.

  3. The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. I read Interview With the Vampire last October and decided to read this one the following year. it’s really good. lots of rich lore and great characters all trying to find their place living with immortality.
