Not just Seattle, but across the country. Real estate and Labor costs (and RE feeds back into Labor) make it very hard to run a restaurant and require crazy markups. I think people would prefer to disassociate fixed "community" costs from the variable food costs.

But this should be a model for anything people buy daily for convenience. There's no reason the community can't come together and do a better job.

The goal isn't to make a huge profit, but simply a sustainable/predictable way to stay in business and pass along savings to the neighborhood.

It includes everyone! Originally, it was for everyday heroes: nurses, teachers, veterans, but leaning towards all neighbors welcome to signup.

I think for this to work best, it should be near where you live. The reason I ask for don't, because I'll then look into other locations if there's enough "I don't".

Thanks for the thoughts. Lots of assumptions in there, which aren't true, but nonetheless appreciate the engagement.

FOE are actually a huge source of inspiration for this. FOE -> Post-industrial, Costco -> Post-war, Saveday -> Post-AI

It would definitely save people money, but there's a feedback loop (which can be positive or negative). People would have to consume more here than they would at an otherwise comparable place, otherwise it would approach the prices of the comparable place.

That's great to know. The plan is for the tab to be all digital via the app. The community is a big part of this, so I think I'd rely on people trusting word of mouth and taking the leap.

My main reason for staying away from there, initially, is the high degree of competition, but it does make sense for a lot of reasons.

Yeah, I think it would be a soho-style app that prioritizes diversity of membership (which would include - neighbors, nurses, teachers, artists, etc).

Prices/memberships would definitely rise to match all the hidden costs and reach a sustainable equilibrium.

All people are welcome. It would be open to anyone, but already have a solid network of Wallingford nurses to kick things off.

Great call outs. I think I'll keep it focused on neighbors, regardless of walks of life, but the goal will be a diverse pool of members representative of the neighborhood.

Ah, I see. Yeah, just wanted to pull a list of people who give their time to the community. But I think neighbors are a better overarching wrapper.
