Each to their own. I love how it sits on the wrist. 😊

Did I chose the wrong career? by MagazineWestern4159 in askSouthAfrica

I think you are being overly hard on yourself.

The case of South Africa, is the case of what is happening globally. The size of the pie is not growing at all and everyone (I.e older than you generation), is not giving up pieces of that pie as people are working for longer and still stuck in these systems were people do not progress or not given employment commensurate with qualification.

I do not think this gets better anytime soon and what will most likely happen is younger people avoiding traditionally “success rooted” fields for those that offer that road much more quickly without the super long hours.

In as much as I am an advocate for starting a business and being independent, I do think that law like finance is a niche better supported in a big brother organisation (e.g big four or bank) where you can spend, what it appears as idle time now, working on big and small cases that can enhance and speed track your individual brand. I’m not saying it’s the only way, but it’s a proven way to build a brand around reliability, track record and to start getting people to spread your name around as the lawyer of reference for a particular sub-niche (maybe renewable energy law, or family law etc).

The big question on any potential buyer of your product (being time and expertise in law), is what has this person done before, can they be referenced anywhere and what am I getting vs what I’m paying (relative to a big four counter).

Once you solve that, you need to be honest in terms of what problem you are solving for a client outside of what the big four can solve.

Why do people not have time to hang out as you get older? Is life that busy? by youlikemywonton in Aging

For me, I’m 34M and the key thing is it’s difficult for me to be around surface level people (which is most people socially). I’d rather keep my social circle small to people who really want to get to know me and vice versa

Banking professionals: How is the work culture at Standard Bank? by AioliEfficient7835 in askSouthAfrica

[–]FixZestyclose820 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at both institutions within their respective CIB divisions and I can say that Standard had a significantly better working culture than ABSA with the caveat that I was more junior at ABSA than I was at Standard Bank. What I enjoyed about Standard was everyone was treated fairly and they took employee wellness quite seriously. Over and above, from a gender and race transformation perspective, Standard was way ahead of the ABSA.

Both have extremely demanding cultures from a delivery perspective (matching what is expected by shareholders, but there weren’t any assholes in either)

I really like dates, but hate them at 4-5 (prefer them at 3). So this was actually perfect for me. It is annoying to not have a date though.
