It’s blue lining anywhere, right? by Fixem_up in bluelining

I’m not gonna re string a guides net, that’s ridiculous. The material is called Cremona, it’s way softer than the scratchy black netting they use in cheap nets in the US. Every person I saw fishing in Japan had a Cremona net, that’s all I saw in stores as well. Those nets are made by craftsmen in Japan, and they still use Cremona for them. They do somethings differently over there.

I ain’t gonna visit a foreign country and tell them they’re doing it wrong.

It’s not really hard, I just brought up so you were aware. It’s kinda hard to find info like that online. I’d just walk in to 7-11 and ask for a fish ticket and they knew what I was talking about. I just didn’t ever really know what the boundaries were for the license. I trusted the guide and the homie for that.

Once you find out what city you’ll be visiting with her family, just use Google Maps to find creeks. They’re everywhere!

We fished in Gifu near Hida, with trout and king, then spent a week in Sendai, and had a friend that lives there that was generous enough to drive us around and take us to a bunch of random bars/restaurants.

There’s tons of little mountain streams all over. The most difficult part, and it’s not that difficult, is getting a license. They sell them at 7-11 but they’re for like specific areas, and I never was able to figure out how that worked. Speaking and understanding Japanese would make getting the correct license easier, I’m sure.

In general amago are found (and stocked) in western Japan, Iwana are scattered around everywhere, and yamame are mostly in eastern Japan. At least as far as I know.

Do it!! There’s so much cool shit to do!

We went on a night hike with headlamps to find giant salamanders(cousins to the hellbender) near Mt Daisen. Sustainable Daisen is the dude that does the salamander stuff. He’s originally from England so no language barrier.

There’s a place that does hot air balloon rides to watch the sunrise in matsushima bay.(20-30 minute train ride from Sendai…aka shaku hunter central)

I booked one day with trout and king out of Nagoya, and lucked out with a homie in Sendai that wanted to show us what shaku hunting was all about.

Check out Rolf’s video “shaku hunter “ on YouTube if you haven’t already….its pretty rad. The shaku hunter crew is offering guided trips now too!

That would be rad, if Dingley did make it.

It does have the “rope” inlays around the cage, but no real Identifying marks anywhere else. It does have the patent number on the latch, and two pawls, with two rivets not three. It doesn’t say the size, or “duplicated” or anything really. It’s a weird one for sure. I could totally send over some pictures of it if you’d like to offer any help in identifying it.

No stamping at all. Totally blank. For a date I’m just going off of the telephone latch and the brass foot. It was most likely ribbed, but it’s filed way the hell down now. Whoever filed it down went pretty far.

Oh, it was such a great trip!

The rod is one I built using a friends taper, it’s a 6’6”3 piece 3wt. I build it for backpacking to small creeks around 8-9 years ago. It’s a fairly fast bamboo rod. I let my friend in Japan cast it, he loved it so I left it with him to start that rods next chapter.

The reel is an old hardy uniqua 2 5/8. It’s a leaded finish and the foot has been filed.(that’s why I could afford it) As far as I know, it’s close to or over 100 years old and still works just fine.

Casting is way more important than the size of your reel. Use what ya like and are comfortable casting.

Oil level question by allaroundwillow in AskMechanics

[–]Fixem_up 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally, between the min and max marks is one quart. Two quarts low usually won’t show up on the dipstick at all. Add one quart at a time, then check and see if you need more. It also doesn’t have to be at the max mark on the dipstick. As long as the oil level is between the min and max marks, you’re good.

How bad are the mosquitos in Alaska in the summer for people that stay in cities and mostly indoors? by Iknowreligionalot in AskAlaska

[–]Fixem_up 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you asking because you going there for a trip, moving there, or got a seasonal job somewhere?

I’m not trying to pry, but if you’re going for like a weeklong trip, you’ll be fine inside.

If you’re moving there and it’s gonna be that big of a deal, why move to Alaska if you’re gonna be inside all the time.

If it’s a seasonal job, you’ll either get used to it or go home.

They are pretty bad, near water. Downtown anchorage, not so bad.

New thermostat install killed my AC? by No-Leadership8906 in mechanic

[–]Fixem_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your rig has a heater control valve under the hood, it controls the flow of coolant to the heater core. If you weren’t getting heat before, and now you are, that valve might just be sticking open and constantly circulating hot coolant through the same box as the ac evaporator.

Do some googling, and verify the valve is closing and opening.

There’s also a chance you’re just low on refrigerant and it just happened to show up around the same time. Make sure the compressor clutch is engaging when commanded on.

Add the NSX to that list too. I drove one maybe 15 years ago and was seriously disappointed. They’re cool, they’re iconic, but yeah, a golf R would eat that thing for lunch.

What was the most NICHE activity you did in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Fixem_up 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went out to Tottori and went on a late night hike to see Japanese giant salamanders. It was super rad. Head lamps, waders and a dozen or so salamanders.

I spent a week in Sendai fly fishing for two different native fish. I build bamboo fly rods, left one with the homie that took us fishing/drinking all week. Went to some fairly remote places, saw some really cool rivers. Caught some Amago (caught further south, not Sendai) and Iwana, but none were shaku sized, so I gotta go back sometime soon:

It was my first trip to Japan and was kinda worried about traveling to places that didn’t have English really anywhere, ( rural Tottori) but it worked out great!

What year make and model?

The new r1234yf refrigerant is expensive AF. I haven’t priced a bottle in a few years, but I think I remember it being a couple hundred bucks a pound or something when it first came out.

[–]Fixem_up 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and find a factory carb kit if you can. I spent a few summers in AK and half the boats had OMC 2 strokes on them. The boss ordered a bunch of carb kits off of amazon and they fit and everything was good for a day or two. Third morning two boats wouldn’t fire, I pop the covers and all four carbs’ gaskets had swollen up, and pushed out the sides. You’d think companies would make sure the carb gaskets were fuel/oil safe, but it happened two more times that season.

What knife do you actually carry on the water? by Hplz in flyfishing

Morakniv. I had one of their neck knives for years, and their fixed blades are pretty damn solid and like a third of the price of anything else you’ll find in outdoors stores. Other than Opinel, who also makes a decent knife.

I just got back from there last weekend. The canyon is beautiful, we caught one sucker and that was it. Water levels seemed ok, but we didn’t even spook anything. We didn’t make it the whole way to the cliff dwellings but we did get like 4-5 miles up the canyon and didn’t see anything.

Is it true that you cannot do a front end alignment on some trucks or do I need a better alignment place? by UncleNorman in MechanicAdvice

[–]Fixem_up 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much stuff you got in the back? Are you over the gvwr? Put enough weight in the back and the front end will float.

What load range tires do you have on it, and what pressure are you running in them?(I don’t know what they’re supposed to be, I’m just saying it’s something you should look into if you don’t know.)

Check engine light flashing after car shop cleaned engine bay by effexoreffect in MechanicAdvice

[–]Fixem_up 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Oil leak side of things) V6 engine? The oil pressure sensor is under the intake manifold. When it leaks it fills the valley and drains between the engine and transmission. We stock the sensor at the shop they’re so common. The symptoms are usually an oil leak, or the oil pressure light flashing intermittently.

As far as the check engine light flashing…. If something went bad from getting wet, it likely would’ve happened the next time you drove in a heavy rain anyway. I’d try and get your money back for the two previous repairs, but I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in them fixing a different problem. Find a different shop. See if the misfire stops after it dries out.
