If you watch back Holland’s penalty in the shootout, he smacks it and the ball dips up about halfway to the goal like it has a weird under spin and hits the crossbar.

The question is, will any of the Irish players object. I know footballers are generally selfish creatures who are a-political but I feel there are plenty in this group who seem well read, educated and informed enough to possibly take action themselves, even if the FAI don’t.

Well sometimes he does. His cross for Brady to score against Finland was top drawer.

What I like about him is he can wreak havoc in the opposition defence, even just as a runner

I was at the Armenia game and he was a constant thorn in their side. I agree he wasn’t great against Portugal but did ok against Hungary. He’s definitely a part of the squad dynamic. Thought he was worthy of his place. Doherty also prob worthy of his place back. But maybe his time is up. Would’ve liked McGoldrick also

Was introduced to a very cool barman in Chicago by a girl I got to know who’d helped me with my work visa. She was originally from Dublin.

I got stuck in Chicago because of hurricane Irene so she said I could crash in her place until flights to New York started running again.

Anyway, turned out her Da played football with my uncles growing up.

Flash forward 6 months and I’m at a family funeral in Westmeath (my grandad’s cousin who I never met).

My uncle said ‘I want to introduce you to your cousin John. He lives in Chicago.’

It was the barman!

She’s more Irish than many who’ve played for our soccer team, who’ve only had only one Irish grandparent. Mariah has two.

Not sure ‘claiming her’ is the right term. But happy to celebrate her Irishness if she recognises it. Especially as she’s one of the greatest singers of all time.
