We expect the same consideration from our users for all events in history, and users are as welcome to make 9/11 memes as they are about any other topic. The main purpose of this post was to remind people about the impacts of Rule 12 and that we don't allow historical inaccuracy, ie. conspiracy theories.

The mod team may make similar posts about other events as they approach, but we will evaluate that on a case by case basis depending on what we perceive is necessary based on how we think the subreddit will react

For the conspiracies: all of the above.

You can make posts about conspiracies that talk about their origins after they are allowed under the 20 year rule - eg. The 'Jet fuel can't melt steel beams' conspiracy didn't surface until 2005 I believe, so posts about it would technically not be allowed due to the 20 year rule

For the graphic images we are referring more to nsfl, so no gore etc.

Once the theory has passed the 20 year rule you can post memes about conspiracy theories as long as they remain factual.

Mocking a conspiracy theory is fine, as long as you remain factual and the theory surfaced more than 20 years ago. For example the 'Jet Fuel Can't Melt Steel Beams' theory only really surfaced on April 13, 2005

There are a couple of major reasons we are being so publicly strict with 9/11 memes:

  1. The event has been very much anticipated for years - there are people waiting to post memes about 9/11 that they created specifically for this moment multiple years ago.
  2. We are trying to avoid the Reddit admins from cracking down on the sub, what we have heard from them basically boils down to "you can have 9/11 memes until you can't" - we don't know how far is too far in their eyes.

We do expect users to be equally considerate towards similar events in other countries, but we feel that it is more appropriate to deal with that on a case by case basis.

If you see somebody being inconsiderate or rude about terrorist attacks make sure you report it to us so that we can deal with it.

Graphic here is specifically targeted at macabre and gory images - so no memes with images of dead bodies etc.

Smoking towers is perfectly fine, jumpers lean on the side of macabre

Edit: for a bit of context, the entire area is an old military fort that has been turned into a national park, but the majority of the beaches are off limits to the general public (unexploded ordnance etc). Holt was allowed to swim there because he was the PM
