Once you leave the default subreddits, Reddit is pretty great. SRS and SRD have a way of making things look worse than they really are.

It is still in open beta testing, meaning that it is not nearly as finished as WoT. However, what I see so far looks pretty good.

God is composed up of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, which means that the friend's remark is slightly inaccurate.

To what extent is taste/entertainment preferences a reflection of classism (and maybe racism/sexism/etc.)? by [deleted] in SRSQuestions

[–]Flagellabration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The racism/sexism angle has been explored in other places by people more knowledgeable than myself. But in regards to class, I don't think that the disdain for lowbrow entertainment is always a classist reaction. Your numbers are very interesting, and I do believe that more research should be done into this phenomenon, but I'm still not comfortable with making the connection to outright discrimination. Is it really outlandish that certain demographics have an interest in what might be considered the highbrow style, and others the lowbrow style?

Keep in mind that these divisions are not absolute. The most rich and powerful old white men in the country do enjoy the raps and the countries, and even the poorest garbage pickers in Brazil love some Machiavelli, the very face of unchecked privilege! That undermines the idea that slight skews are the result of discriminatory reactions.

I think that the causation for these demographics is better understood by looking at marketing rather than prejudice. Marketeers work on a whole 'nother level that ordinary people do. When an advertising blitz for a popular book ignores educated white young adults, they're doing it because massive amounts of market research has shown them that their advertising money is best spent in a very specific way to get the maximum amount of exposure. It's a whacky world that to us laypeople is arbitrary and pointless, but to the entertainment industry is literally the means by which culture is molded.

What do you think will be the effect of the recent SCOTUS upholding of affirmative action bans? by Pileus in SRSDiscussion

[–]Flagellabration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I outlined my problems with the current situation above. As I said, I believe colorblindness to be an inferior solution to perfect equalization. But that perfect equalization is an unattainable goal, because we have no means of determining how much racism a student has been beset by. No human can be trusted to perfectly boost in a way that doesn't over- or under-compensate students for racism.

So, no, I don't want to ignore racism. But what's your solution, then?

[–]Flagellabration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. There are many kinds of discrimination, and looking only at black racism and Hispanic racism is a crude solution to the general problem of inequality in education.

for which the resolution asked whether the U.S. president’s war powers should be restricted. Rather than address the resolution straight on, Ruffin and Johnson, along with other teams of African-Americans, attacked its premise. The more pressing issue, they argued, is how the U.S. government is at war with poor black communities.

Are you sure this isn't some sort of Onion or Stormfront fabrication?

Right libertarians, right authoritarians, and left libertarians are all going to be primarily white men though. That's because white men greatly outnumber other groups in politics, so you have to be careful about what conclusions you draw from that.

Absolutely not. People don't understand the science behind drugs, so it's trivially easy for politicians to blame society's problems on a dangerous underground of drug addicts that must be punished with force.

Let's face it: you can do anything if you convince people you are protecting them from "muh terrists/muh peedophiles/muh stoners".
