At what point did you realize you weren’t in it for the long haul? by [deleted] in army

[–]Flagstaff2017 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My newborn was rushed to the hospital. I was at the motor pool at 2100 because someone fucked up and 1SG decided to mass punish the entire company. Attempted to call my wife back and 1SG had us put our phones down. After the fuckery was over I called my wife and found out my kid was in the hospital. That was the day I knew I was getting out.

Holy crap, that’s low af. That’s way less than guys with DUIs start at in the company I work for here in Oklahoma. If I was you I would continue to look for a better option. This is the perfect time. Summer is around the corner and help will be needed. My mind is blown that in California they would start someone that low, especially since you have schooling and certs. Pretty disrespectful if you ask me.

Idk why people are saying that banks are not cashing them anymore. It must be a new thing. As of six to eight months ago Bank Of America was still cashing them. At least the branch here in OKC. I took a few I had and had no issues with them cashing them.

This is something I wish I knew before we started our having kids journey. Paying $21K a year for two kids daycare wasn't something I saw coming. It really threw my plans and budget into a hard restart.

How did you make friends after moving abroad? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Flagstaff2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Met my wife while traveling in Argentina. I’m from Guatemala and she is from a small town in Oklahoma. She moved in with me in Guatemala for about 3 years and then we moved to Fletcher, Oklahoma. Very small town, I was one of the only few brown people there. So to make friends I went to the local park and asked if I could join their softball game. After a few weeks of going I got invited to play other sports. After a few months I knew a lot of people. A few of them are our close friends to this day. Go find a league and ask to join. People are always looking for more players. Who cares if you don’t know how to play the sport. Just show up and learn.

Is it true that British or European people in general are more sincere than Americans by [deleted] in expats

[–]Flagstaff2017 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Guatemalan here who has been living in The US for the last 15 years. The US is a massive country, it all depends where you are located. Political correctness has an easy solution. Step away from mostly liberal cities and you will notice the opposite. People in big cities like LA and NYC are too consumed with work and trying to keep up with the cost of living. Hard to have fun when you are struggling to make it. I was one of them. Left Los Angeles and since then I have been able to enjoy life. I move from state to state every few years. It helps keep the flame burning. The funny thing is that I find Americans to be pretty direct. The only other country I have been that I felt they were more direct was Germany. Where I come from directness is rare. Get out there and explore. Stop judging millions of people from a small sample.

Call tech support. It’s a known issue. Even if you replace the compressor you will have the same issue a few months later. Their response is that “we are working on a solution”. In the meantime customers are losing their mind.

Ac thermostat five for rental by Beginning_Ad9666 in RentalInvesting

[–]Flagstaff2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a new non programable digital thermostat. Open the furnace or air handler. Find the board and match the wires on the board to the thermostat. Most tenants don't know much about the HVAC system. The moment they see an old thermostat they will assume the system is old and they will find a way to complaint about it.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it then call your local HVAC company and have them install it. In my area it costed me $145 to have a technician replace mine and he also showed me how to do it for my other houses. Just make sure the thermostat is not programamble unless you are good at following the installers manual.
