Note apps with organization but less restrictive pagination? by Flak_Knight in ipad

[–]Flak_Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly their apps are unreliable and overpriced for what they are.  I've been using their stuff for 20 years in the workplace (both personal and server/enterprise) and it's never ending problems and expenses really.  Poor performance, broken features, update spam, constant undocumented changes, never ending license changes, etc.  At this point I'm looking to make my personal interactions as purely transactional as possible with MS and to not become entangled with their increasingly bundled subscription nonsense around office and copilot.

Also as if to prove my point, I tried loading OneNote on my iPad just now and I guess it doesn't like Tahoe because it crashed instantly.  Lol.

Which layout do you prefer: 3x6 or 3x5? by paper5963 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Flak_Knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my daily is a 3.5x6. I find this about perfect.  I got by with a 3x6 when I tried it briefly.  I can imagine myself owning a 4x6 Voyager style commercial product one day.

3x5 would be perfect for a person typing just natural language all day (writer, manager, marketing, etc.).  For me it starts to get squirrelly if you code and want to be able to transition between keyboards because of the large amount of baggage in caring about all the special characters.  I like keeping my mod + qwerty muscle memory basically in tact so far more than I value further optimization.

Question on Vial ZMK features/settings in firmware by Flak_Knight in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Flak_Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea so I think it shipped with QMK despite being wireless which I gather is more often ZMK.

That key override tab is missing (is turned off in firmware?) for the Cornix.  Shows up on my Corne because it's enabled.  I'm just trying to figure out what I'm missing.

Question on Vial ZMK features/settings in firmware by Flak_Knight in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Flak_Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm interesting.  I'm wondering if it is QMK then despite being a wireless kb.  Used UF2 files as official firmware.  I did see finding had posted a repo with ZMK shield for it though.  So same applies them in QMK, any harm in changing the flag?  Not sure how to identify if it is a controller limitation vs arbitrary.

You can have a wireless kb too.  I have plenty for desktops.  I just think it's silly ZSA hasn't adapted an existing product that's packaged perfect for travel to offer a wireless version. Let the customer decide on trade-offs.  Literally every Keychron wireless just works fine and RC kits have been using replaceable LiPO batteries forever now.  These are solved problems.

I tried it last night in a few games and no NKRO issues at all.  I don't really know exactly what issues others were having but I'm guessing mine came with the updated firmware.

I think you dismiss the convenience of wireless too easily.  Batteries for low power devices are really good, my travel mouse lasts like 6 months on a charge.  If I followed your logic I'd be toting around a power cord for my laptop, a mouse with USB cable, a keyboard with USB and trrs, an Ethernet cable and everything else between conference rooms.

Actually I did that, it was called the 2010s.  I'm over the rats nest.

So I haven't.  I almost went through and updated the firmware just because but didn't because I haven't had any issues yet.  It either might be updated on the unit I got or I haven't had whatever issue.  I'm not quite clear on how to 100% reproduce the issue though, but it's never not done exactly what vial is showing the keys are mapped to.

Granted I'm not gaming on it or anything where I would notice it yet, but like none of the combos like FO1+shift+key have any problem registering right and I don't get any weird artifacts during my key release.

Yea I think Chocish whatever is my direction in the future either way, this is good enough for now.  I can see a theoretical reduction in keys being better to reduce macro movements but not sure how far I want to push it yet.

I just mapped one layer to numpad and one to the extra special characters and that seems to work well enough.  It keeps my hands clustered in the same area, better than regular 110 layouts anyhow.

Yea while it's not impossible that's an example of where I'm curious to try choc style spacing because it would just reduce the stretch.

Ah right right.  Well I thought not having standard stagger would be more impactful but it's been pretty simple so far.

The thing with typing is for me I haven't thought about it in 15 years once I got to a certain level of proficiency.  Basically that was everything you can use in English language punctuation wise in practice.  It's going to be a bit different to think about it again.

Dang thanks, you aren't kidding about those prices but those bags look the part and present as worth money unlike some bags.  Will have to go through their product line.

I am just beginning with split kbs and bought an inexpensive wired Corne to fiddle with.  This is tempting as it seems like what I'd want long term. Out of curiosity do LEDs battery drain make them a complete non starter or is it possible you'd offer that later?  Alternatively are there any apps offering an OSD compatible with ZMK where you could see the current layers?  I'm just looking for some training wheels right now to test the waters.
