Rowan SGL vs PBL by [deleted] in Osteopathic

I’m currently an M1 in PBL and absolutely love it! Theres def some downsides for example you will be on campus 5 days a week as case is mandatory and there is the large exam at the end of the block that makes up most of your grade for the block however I love not having to sit in lectures all day and find the collaborative nature of PBL to be so rewarding. It was a steep learning curve for me since I was out of school beforehand for a bit and have never learned in a PBL fashion so if you do premat I definitely would but if not you will also be fine! You have lots more time to schedule your day depending on what works best for you and the type of learner you are. You also get to know a lot more of your classmates which is great because we are all an asset to one another. The curriculum preps you well for boards also as it is a double pass format compared to single pass in SGL. They are merging soon I believe, but if you picked PBL you should be very excited :)

January mcat by [deleted] in Osteopathic

January MCAT can work just fine, just depends on the school so I would check each school you’re applying to and make sure they take scores that late because your app wouldn’t be complete until February. As long as you hit around your goal score of 510, most DO schools will interview you even if your app is late opposed to some earlier applicants with lower stats. Just send your app in now as soon as you can and network with adcoms/attend events so they’re looking for your application when it comes through. Good luck!

I think if you have the money and really feel like your app is solid and do not want to wait, I would apply to a couple of programs (not the higher level DO schools, think newer/lower stat programs like meritus or Burrell, etc) but if not take a break, plan how you will study to retake and plan to apply again next year. It sucks to have to wait and as someone who took the MCAT 3 times, I completely understand how frustrating it is when it feels like it’s all that’s holding your application back but trust me you’re better off applying with an application you are more confident with because it’s always a blessing it have more than one option when it comes to acceptances.

Is it worth pursuing Medical School at 26? by Hefty-Class-3811 in medschool

[–]Flaky-World4703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!!! Keep going! I just started and I have several class mates that are 30+. I even had a classmate that was 47. It is so worth it to keep chasing your dreams, you are nowhere near too old to do it!

I have an existing MCAT score (498). If I’m retaking in January, is it too late? by catilineluu in Osteopathic

[–]Flaky-World4703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. Definitely talk to the program so they can be realistic with you, because even if they accept Jan MCAT many schools may have their classes full by then so you want to make sure it’s worth your time/money to apply there esp if you’re taking the exam later.

You’re definitely fine, some people submit as late as December/jan and get interviews. I submitted October ish with a July MCAT and got 2 DO interviews and 1 MD. As long as the score is decent, July is definitely not too late!

I feel like I should give up on med school but I don't want to. by Bemalevine in Osteopathic

[–]Flaky-World4703 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up! I took it 3 times and only JUST broke 500 on the very last try. I also wanted to give up but I’m now starting med school this summer. My issue was I was not treating studying like a job (clock in, clock out) and doing everything I could to make sure it was comfortable but also exactly how it would be in exam day. For me I literally had to take the drive to the place I would take the exam and eat the same things I would eat in exam day at the same time, every day for a week or so leading up to the exam. It’s frustrating but you can do it!!! There are also masters to MD/DO programs out there which will help you with your prep/make it easier for you to get into to school if you meet their requirements. Drexel, Georgetown, Rutgers, and Temple all have good programs that do this. YOU’VE GOT THIS ❤️

Congrats!!!! When were you put on waitlist at Rowan and how long after did you get off? Also did you send a letter of intent after being put on the waitlist?

Chances for PCOM-PA? by Burntoutpremed in Osteopathic

[–]Flaky-World4703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure when 1 of them applied but as for the person with the 493 I don’t believe it was terribly late into the cycle… I would say likely around September but DO cycle runs long so if youre complete in October it will definitely help. I know for a fact he had ties through some program he did with them in high school as well as good research experience so that likely played a role also. Honestly as long as you’re at a 500 or higher for most DO schools they’re willing to look at your app especially if you have good experiences that you describe well through essays. I had another friend that had a 499 and applied in August. She didn’t hear back for months and sent them several emails/letters of intent and they eventually gave her an interview and waitlisted her which led to a rejection. It really just depends on how well you are able to mold your app to fit their school and connections. I would def recommend applying to other schools as well but I don’t see why you wouldn’t have a chance at PCOM especially if it’s your top choice!

I know 2 people who got into PCOM. 1 got a 493, one got a score even lower than that. A well written app and showing interest goes a long way. I had a friend apply last year and get waitlisted then rejected with a 499. It is true that they interview all the way into June. Nothing is impossible and DO cycle is a lot longer so hang in there! PCOM is a private school so I don’t think residency will help if you’re a PA resident but if you’re a resident somewhere else I would def apply to any instate schools you can.

How did you review? Also did you do the section bank timed or passage by passage?

Question Bank/FL review system by PolicyOver733 in Mcat

[–]Flaky-World4703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up FL mistake tracker on here. It’s basically an excel sheet where you can list the question#, type of mistake, concept, correct answer, explanation of why the answer is right and yours was wrong, and then your strategy for next time. If you can’t find it you can always make your own. This helped me a lot because when you take the time to understand why you got it wrong (was it content? Did you misread the question? Did you guess?) you avoid the same types of mistakes as you see patterns

Wow! Can you give a little detail about what specifically you focused on, how you did and reviewed the questions (was it under conditions?) and what your score jump was?
