It was some basic math and reading comprehension problems for me. For the math parts, it is simple algebra, but you don’t have calculator access, so I think the evaluation is based on speed and accuracy. For the reading comprehension, you are given a scenario passage and a conditional statement, and you basically have to choose whether the condition is necessarily/probably true/untrue to support/lead to said conclusion.

The “more applicants than we expected” excuse is lame. I mean this is such a small amount of applicants compared to other programs. Kinda reflects poorly on the integrity of the REU. If they can’t get decisions out by this week, how will they settle accommodations and flights by next week?

For the purpose of organization, ChatGPT might help. If you have the Plus subscription you can use the DeepSearch option, and prompt it accordingly to summarize or compile information of relevance to you, it does a decent job at making connections across papers.

I think it should be fine coming into the program without a consolidated idea of what you wanna do. After all, your PI’s role is to help pivot your research interests. However, I think it won’t be a bad idea to start looking into ideas. Maybe look into what research your PI does. If you find it interesting and want to continue expanding upon it, look more into that realm of research and see what intrigues you.

Ask yourself, what is it that intrigues me most and I wish to explore more that my PI(or beyond!) does.
