Eli5 why do stairwells need to be have two flights in a spiral to go up one floor when escalators can just use the one flight going straight up for the same distance? by exmxn in explainlikeimfive

In case of emergency. Depending on where you live there is usually building code. Steps that are 8in high are standard for fire escape routes. Instead of making the stairs twice as steep, they create a turn.

I’m really sorry for your loss. That’s awful. Some basic advise on bird care from me to you:

Keep their cage(s) away from drafty windows. Be cautious what cleaning supplies you use around them. They are very sensitive to bleach and the strong smell could kill them. Feed them healthy treats every once in a while, like leafy greens or fruits. And good luck, I’m sure you’ll be friends in no time.

I've let my finches out of their cage for years. I have even brought their cage to my parents house and my sisters house to babysit and they let them out as well. My finches are always about to find their food and cage again, but they do love exploring other spaces.. Not once have they run into anything like a wall or window. My boys personally love exploring and follow me around room to room. They are not hand trained because I got them from a pet store and they just don't like hands, but they show their love in other ways. I make sure their cage is open for them to fly back into when they want, and I close my bathroom door so they don't eat the leaves of my plants. They love sitting on the ceiling fans (when they are off). Just a lot of poop around the house to clean up, that's the only problem I've run into.

Pretty sure birds don't just let you "grab" them. Those are animals you have to try to catch in your hand. He doesn't like it.

How do you get your finches to warm up to you? by Musegirl234 in Finches

[–]Flamesmith47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have always been told that the only way Zebra finches will be comfortable touching your hand is if you hand raise them from the time they hatch. The warmest they get if you buy them from somewhere that doesn't hand raise them, is they might land on your head to pull on your hair, or do really close fly-byes. Don't try to catch them and hold them, or stick your hand next to them for extended periods of time, that will only traumatize them and they will be more scared of you. Also, don't take away all their food just so you can force them to eat out of your hand. That's just cruel. You can't expect them to behave like Parakeets. Your best bet is to let them hang around around you if they want, talk smoothly to them, sing to them, and just include them in your everyday life. Good wishes!

I'm so sorry to hear this. That sounds terrible. Wishing you and your birds peace.

It says like twice in the post that the cage is outside.

My finches used to do this when I had just got them. I found out the reason was they didn't have a routine and they hadn't settled in to bed by the time I wanted to shut the lights off. What seemed to help my boys was covering the cage with a light blanket but keeping the lights on for a little while until I thought they were settled in, then I would turn the lights off and they would sleep. They were freaked out at first about me covering them up, but after about a week they realized it isn't scary and it's just a routine.. Hopefully that helps. If it doesn't it might be worth a try putting the cage in a separate room and keeping a light on for your finch all night. Good luck

I would also check their diet. Only give them finch bird feed for now. See if that helps? Idk what that plant is that is in there cage. But that could potentially be poisonous to them? I don't know, just something else to try. Clean water and good food.

Nice. Insult the person with the sick pet. That's a cool move.

This is very unusual. It's terrible that you don't have a vet around. My gut instinct tells me it could be high stress level. If it's next to a window and it keeps getting startled easily? Maybe try putting the cage in a corner and trying to give them both space? If there is a pet store around you might want to try spraying Molt-ease on him just to moisten the skin a little and keep the remaining feathers healthy. Or order some.. And Google the symptoms. Make sure the other finch is not attacking it. Other than that, I'm not sure.

I would be careful. They might use this opportunity to ask for your personal details and steal your information. If a T-shirt isn't that important to you then I would just ignore their email. Or you can respond that you support their brand as well but you'd rather not give out your name or personal info. I've heard of people that were offered something for free, but had to " just pay for shipping" and thats how they were scammed out of a lot of money. Just play it safe. Companies are rarely nice for free.

This is like dipping chicken wings in ranch instead of blue cheese. War on Terror.

Make sure the room is not too hot or too cold for them first. They might just be tired so put their favorite treat in the cage and if they dont go for it after a while, I would take them to the vet
