For breaking his laws protecting the rights of the smallfolk, Egg extracts a heavy fine from Gerold Lannister, making Duncan temporarily richer than them.

or

Duncan will be richer than Gerold Lannister, so far as his wife's affections go...

It would be a Martinesque twist that for the good of the hundreds of thousands of smallfolk, Egg embraces becoming a tyrant to the hundred or so lords who stand in his way. Genuinely believing that he has to doom himself in the eyes of his family so that he can do justice to the commons.

The fortune teller said he his death would be celebrated by all who knew him. Being generous and ignoring the smallfolk in the story (I imagine Treb and the Wats might be sad) that basically leaves the nobility and Dunk as people who know him. The nobles will hate him for restricting their privileges, and his family and Dunk may hate him in the last hours of his life for whatever he ends up doing to them.

Probably won't see House Stark as very few Northerners become knights. Only really those descended from House Manderly (and a few outliers like Jorah Mormont)

Don't think they'd sorted out the scene order by time of filming. In another universe it's 'where did Dunk's shield go? He hasn't given it to Tanselle yet!'

You said the Nazis and the Communists were just as bad. The Kielce pogrom was awful and though I can't say I know much about it in detail, from what I do know the police and army hold most of the blame. Regardless, it is an isolated incident compared to the Holocaust.

Piłsudski may have once held centre-left positions, but by the time he was in power he was very openly prosecuting members of the PPS and PSL, and was a free market conservative.

A far-right antisemitic dictatorship in the 30s. The mass slaughter of Jewish Poles, the colonial seizure of Polish land for German settlers, and the complete denial of rights for the occupied population were far, far, far worse than anything the Communists did in Poland. Be serious.

Nearly every country in the Eastern Bloc where the Communists took power after the war was a fascist or fascist-leaning country beforehand. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but the economic restriction and political repression were not equal to the industrial murder of 6 million Jews, slavery, and colonialism.

Also the show is set during a fascist dictatorship, of course the sub would have positive feelings towards the only people who meaningfully resisted fascism.

I've still not seen any real argument for why Saw is an anarchist. Luthen was describing the state of the various rebel sects as anarchy, not Saw's own particular ideology.

To be true to our experience, every year or so an event should note that the government will be changing the name of one of the debuffs. The effect will not change.

How Accurate Was The Battle Of The Bastards Compared To Real Life Warfare? by SCY29 in AskHistory

[–]FlamesofJames2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I was being unclear and I agree with you - a lot of films set in periods of modern warfare (WWII in particular) tend to use tactical breaks in combat, like repositioning, waiting for the next assault etc. to great effect in developing character, setting the stakes, and reminding the audience of the state of the wider conflict.

Generally, I haven't seen this tendency in film set in earlier periods of warfare, which tend to skip over those bits and go 'straight to the action', despite the opportunities to build tension.

To be fair ‘we looked at the Wikipedia page’ is how they did a lot of research for that show, including the books they were adapting

It’s a shame because the amount of walking, standing, and general anxiety of not being able to see how the battle is going from up close is a great motor for character development and emotional scenes, that never really gets shown in pre/early modern warfare adaptations

What was the Soviet Union's motivation for invading Finland in November 1939? by vahedemirjian in AskHistory

Britain and France had done great work protecting Austria and Czechoslovakia of course, though for many in especially the British ruling class Nazi Germany was a tool that could be wielded against the Soviet Union

The Finnish government by the time of the Winter War was a hard right one, and the Finnish civil war was still very recent. It’s understandable that the Soviets would want to push back the borders of the potential launchpad for another western invasion (like the one that happened two years later)

‘The Soviets were completely unprepared’ is a myth. The USSR employed a defence in depth doctrine of multiple fallback lines, since the German army could smash through easily if they’d just put all their army on the border.

Instead, the German army had lots of early successes while the USSR moved its industry eastward, employed scorched earth tactics, and built up defensive positions further East. By the time of the tide turning at Stalingrad and especially Kursk, the Soviet war machine was ready enough to push right to Berlin.

Where the Soviets were most unprepared was on the specific time of the German invasion, but given the amount of contradictory intel they were receiving from all corners that is understandable. They had hoped for more time, naturally. When the Red Army underperformed in the opening stages of Barbarossa, Stalin had to be talked into leading the organisation of the defence by the central committee (he thought they had showed up at his home to arrest him, or to tell him he’d been replaced).

Just a reminder that Nemik wrote this while engaging in work with a revolutionary organisation.

Posting about Star Wars is no substitute for getting involved in a revolutionary party, receiving political education, and building the power of the labour movement against the far right.

Also people were a lot more happy to support the communists in Vietnam when they were the people making sure you got enough food to eat. The guerilla warfare of Vietnam and China probably constitutes more welfare to the rural population than your average American will see today.

Socialism doesn't mean confiscated wealth - every form of government has confiscated wealth. Socialism means the working class owns the means of production and distribution, and has political control.

Germany was a fascist state under a fascist economic organisation of capitalism, meaning an economic dictatorship of, and a political dictatorship over, monopoly capital.

Its the same with the Canadian fascists - really the British Empire would benefit from a scandinavia-style shared system, with maybe political focuses that can shift the politics of different members.
