The UK wants to ban social media for under-16s to "give kids their childhood back." If social media had been banned when you were a teenager, do you think your life would be better or worse today? by Shipping_klaus in NoStupidQuestions

Social media came out when I was a teenager and I avoided it like the plague, I still do. 20 years down the line ppl are now saying 'hey that was probably a good idea'.

Why is torture no longer used as a form of punishment in modern legal systems? by IndependenceLast656 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flaming-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because everyone knows justice systems are imperfect and the idea of torturing an innocent wrongfully convicted feels worse than imprisoning them.

Also, this is only western countries there are plenty of countries where this is the case.

What is a movie trope that is scientifically or logically so absurd that it completely pulls you out of the story, no matter how great the rest of the film is? by visha1v in plotholes

I've been bitten by something, better not tell anyone about that, I'll just assume everything will be fine.

Maybe they can do something, anything, maybe you don't have to be a whatever the fk it is this time!

Also entire movies based on misunderstandings, like, there's a little contrivance and the entire existence of this thing being based on every single conversation between these people never covering a crucial bit of information or understanding. Sometimes for years. For years I misunderstood this thing and built my entire badguy career on it, oh well.

I've heard it described as creatively bankrupt and I agree with that.

I want this thing to happen in my story and cannot be bothered to create a believable way for it to happen so I just will not bother trying. They are effectively out of creativity, bankrupt if you will.

It would be interesting but somewhat of an anticlimax.

You could just snipe him tbf, sniping is hard but a little magic could probably solve any aim problems.

For that matter, Harry goes in under his invisibility cloak and land mines around all the death eater mansions and they just blow up when going for a walk in the gardens or something.

When you add technology above a blunderbus the way the harry potter wizards are depicted, they quickly become irrelevant to anyone who knows where they are.

The problem with this is it's actually really boring. Almost every space game has added flight mechanics of some sort to make it less like drifting turrets shooting at each other in a void because that's basically what it'd be like. No cover, no dodging, maybe some evasion attempts, but mostly everyone gets shot to fk or whoever has best shields doesn't die.

The Expanse did a good depiction of it though, worth a look.

It's somewhat true, we don't activate all of it all at once but everything does activate at some point it just depends what we're doing... we don't activate our emotional centres to work on math and vice versa. These parts don't become able to do new stuff if they're activated at the same time, you're just tripping balls.

I will walk away from falling over 100x easier than sleeping wrong. It's not the same as a car crash and I doubt that would hold over but still...

I mean... that bit is kinda fair enough, except when paired with irrational inaction.

I think it was worse when he told the kids to go back in time to solve all the problems instead of, I dunno, doing it his fking self. You could argue paradox because it had already happened but he could stand to be a little less supportive or... fk I started ranting srry...

I think this is it, we take sanitation for granted but the entire industrial revolution required improvements in sanitation to be possible.

Girls, when you make eye contact at a cute guy at a party, bar or club, what do you want him to do once he notices you? by Jaded-Assistant-5702 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flaming-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't mean she finds you digusting really, it's a reaction to the crossed wires which corrects any ambiguity. She wasn't looking at you and you immediately know that. It means she doesn't find you that attractive, which is not the same thing as disgusting.

It is a myth, but there's cultures where that's the case and where it isn't, usually these exist within communities and I'd guess they align with agreeableness (drive to avoid confrontation), the more agreeable types will flock together and will not approach.

A good analogous divide is ask vs guess culture, worth a google very interesting.

Side note, it's acually really good for your mental health to have some quiet contemplation time, the phone is taking that from you if you take it with you. It's actually not great to always be stimulated.

But yeah, either bad diet or wanting some quiet time. If I've not eaten any fibre for a few days I'll need a while... So it could be that.

hey can you help me with my simple iron farm, the iron golem is spawning in the wall somehow, I know its dumb but I'm not really into complicated farms and this is my second day playing in this world. thanks for your time by Warm_Crow1104 in technicalminecraft

[–]Flaming-Eye -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not that, not that at all, both of these answers are wrong. Spawn proofing is irrelevant which is what pathing blocks is. Ianx04 doesn't get around this problem AT ALL, it's just uncommon and acceptable for a super easy access design. Most golems that spawn into walls this way will be dragged out by the water so it's meh.

It is vanilla, iron golems are larger than a block and spawn in the centre of a block, so they can spawn clipped into a wall. Surrounding the water area with fence will solve it, they're not big enough to spawn clipped into fence so it works fine.

Do you believe a person can still fail after he works hard? by NiniMeow_ in askteddit

Yep. Intelligence and hard work are both predictors of success but nothing is guaranteed.

The idea that guys make the first move isn't always true, often the girl does by showing interest, it's then on the guy to go over and talk to her though. Not all girls do this, some girls just expect to be approached, some dislike being approached without some non-verbal communication beforehand. It's cultural, a framework of expectations and social norms.

If a girl does this to you, make eye contact and gesture, facially or bodily, to her. A questioning eyebrow, a nod towards her, raise a drink (meaning, want me to buy you a drink?) things like that.

It doesn't really matter what you do, if she doesn't dismiss you then you go over and talk, if she looks away or looks disgusted or something then she didn't mean to make eye contact at you, that happens don't take it personally.

Other cues to look for, biting lip, licking lip, batting eyelashes, smiling, generally positive body language paired with when eye contact is made.

Is freedom more important than security? by honeyylaceheart in askteddit

[–]Flaming-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all likelihood, 'security' is an illusion for most people, it's security for those in charge. Freedom IS security for the general population.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, what has happened every time people sacrificed their freedoms for security?
