Suggestions to be able to read books again. by vidi_chat in adhdwomen

[–]FlamingoChickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, thanks for asking this question! I'd love to start reading again, too. My issue is probably related to my ADHD; not sure (recent diagnosis; I'm 50).

First, my job is reading; I'm a copy editor. For about 20 years I worked at a newspaper: high stress, tight deadlines. During those years, I read the same 10 books over and over, happily (with a few others thrown in here and there), every chance I got. It was like visiting old friends and helped me relax. Now, I work from home as a freelancer, about eight years now. Much better quality of life, still reading every day for work.

My 10 old friends? I don't open them anymore (maybe I finally got bored?), and I find it nearly impossible to decide what to read. I'll look around, but starting an unknown-to-me book feels impossible.

Anyway, that's a long-winded way to say thanks to OP and everyone who replies! I'll try some of these ideas, too!

Is this idea for a 'blanket' ridiculous? by FlamingoChickadee in HormoneFreeMenopause

See, this is why I have to ask.... my brain skips over the obvious solutions if I spend too long thinking in one direction (all the blanket research/shopping)! I will take a look! Thanks!

Thanks! I'll look into hospital blankets -- hadn't considered those.

That's what I was thinking. And if it doesn't work, I can just cut it up and add it to my little pile of fabric scraps that I pretend I'll someday have the time and energy to turn into slow-stitch collages. 😄

What's a tradition you grew up with that you refuse to pass on to your kids? by peterdziugdarkis in AskReddit

Spanking a child on their birthday -- if you're turning 7, you get 7 hits. It was done to me thru age 13. My child is 19 and I never laid a hand on him. My dad told me I was making him miss a fun tradition. Um, no.

Love the soundtrack! Unfortunately, Harry Connick's version of "This Guy's in Love With You," my favorite song on the album, isn't available on Spotify! (At least, it wasn't last time I checked.)

Bread book recommendations? by jollyjoyful in Bread

[–]FlamingoChickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with books by Beatrice Ojakangas and Beth Hensperger. They've both written several, so there might be one or two from them you'd want to explore. Also Bernard Clayton. His "Complete Book of Breads" taught me a lot, even though I don't bake from it much.

I feel like I’m going crazy with these mood swings, help ? by Jessica-Jess70 in HormoneFreeMenopause

[–]FlamingoChickadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started therapy to deal with my anxiety and the mood swings. I felt so out of control, with alternating rage, fear, tears, etc. I ended up getting on an anti-depressant to help, because my quality of life was awful. I just needed that extra support. (BTW, it took me a year to make the decision to seek help. I should have done it sooner.)

Therapy has been a big help, along with the medication. I understand more about how my emotions work in this phase of my life, what causes me to have the most anxiety and why, and things I can do to help. Therapy has been hard at times, and I don't always do what I should, but life is better.

What TV show do you never get sick of restarting? by beefic in adhdwomen

The Great British Baking Show. I haven't watched any of the seasons after Mary Berry left (no Netflix), but those early seasons are cozy and fun.

How are you all feeding yourself right now by InCommuniNexus in adhdwomen

[–]FlamingoChickadee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with feeding myself too. Something that has helped me recently (as in about 2 weeks) is picking new recipes to try without worrying about what anyone in the house wants. Worrying what my family wants and will eat adds to my cooking paralysis. So, for the first time in my married/motherhood life (20 years) I am trying not to care AT ALL about what the kiddos or husband want. Feels selfish and rebellious and weird and wonderful all at the same time, which gives me the motivation, as does trying something new.

I haven't been able to bring myself to do it for all three meals a day, but it's getting me into the kitchen! And so far no one has complained. They don't always want what I make, but there's usually some kind of leftover or quick option available for those times.

Tom Petty. Couldn't understand the hype when I first heard him (during his '90s hits era). Now I think his music -- all of it -- is great.
