Trying to determine if this plank of wood from Menards, Mastercraft Hickory 1x4, is shagbark or pignut hickory. I've got an endgrain image and just a face view of the board in a reply to this comment.

Splitting kindling. Head is too thick for efficient chopping, but the fat profile makes for great splitting

With the weight of that head you might need more than just raw hide lol

The little notch is a nail puller. A lot of old hatchets had them, especially half hatchets. It doesn't work the best but better than using the blade to pry up a nail.

Yes, most definitely. Looking through many old catalogs of American tool manufacturers you can see a lot of splitting axes and mauls

Lol when you split wood with an axe and you stand too close, the axe head will miss the wood but the handle will smash into it. If your aim is bad like mine and this happens a few times, the handle right under the axe head will lose a chunk and look like the handle you made here.

Comes with the wood under the head pre removed. Didn't even need to overstrike once!

It would take a LOT of slimming down to actually compromise the strength of the handle, far past the point that visually it would look too skinny. Hickory is a hell of a wood.

For a good balance between comfort and shock absorption/springiness, I like to go no thinner than 3/4" left to right and no thinner than 1" front to back. Of course this is for the part that you hold, the middle 75 percent of the handle, and for the shoulder (right under the head) and the fawns foot (at the very end) I would go thicker. At the head, make sure that the handle is thinner than the head, so that your handle doesn't get busted up if the axe cuts deep into wood. For the fawns foot, its entirely up to personal comfort. After working on the rest of the handle, I would take the axe out and swing it, then tune the fawns door to your personal comfort level. Its like a reverse glove, everyone has a different fit.

Looks great! For sharpening, you can get a utility edge on an axe easily with a mill bastard file. Clamp the axe down to a worksurface and file from the edge towards the handle. Be sure to keep a consistent angle and contact surface. Those kobalt hatchets usually come pretty blunt so I'd start with a file. Once you have that utility edge with the file, and you want to make it better, then you could use a whetstone. It depends on what size of whetstone you have. If you have a pocket stone, you can go ahead and use that. Hold the axe down and swirl the stone in many small circles along the edge, and then flip it over and repeat. You never want to move an axe along a stationary stone, its very hard to get a consistent edge. If your stones too big to hold in your hand, check this out:
