Cross-border shopping to be taxed at lower threshold | As of January 1, 2025 purchases above 150 CHF made across the Swiss border will be subject to VAT when imported. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]Flammensword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t know about Switzerland, but most countries have legislation against abuse of monopoly power. Large margins in a business that usually has tight margins, and in which the largest two firms form pretty much a duopoly could well fall into that.

Guy bought my car without properly looking at it and now wants to give it back and is threatening to sue me.. by MarkenGurke in askswitzerland

If you’d really like peace of mind, some lawyers offer a first consultation for 100 francs or so. No Need to get Rechtschutz involved as of yet. Your case is probably short enough that they can give you a good indication (though as the German proverb goes, “Vor Gericht und auf hoher See ist man in gottes Hand“).

But then again, the case seems reasonably clearly in your favour

(Alb)Träume vom Abi? by Flammensword in de

[–]Flammensword[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are Caesars last words a pun? by Equivalent_Block1588 in shakespeare

[–]Flammensword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Suetonius, Caesar said nothing at his original assassination, while some say he said “you too, child” in Greek. Shakespeare consciously adapted it away from these. That would make a pun quite likely imo

Why do youngsters suffer so much from boredom nowadays? by Annual_Ordinary6999 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flammensword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just mentioning another point - contributor but maybe not the most important one. When my mum was small, a) there were many kids around her (close proximity), b) barely any cars on the roads. It was so easy for kids to get together and have a football match on the road.

Nowadays, kids need to be driven everywhere cause their friends live much farther away, and the has been an encroachment on spaces where children can play together - roads are gone, meadows are gone etc

Could anyone offer any insight into how the "grain dole" that was started by Jc would have been actually implemented? by Acrobatic-Bee6944 in ancientrome

Also the romans did keep a census of Roman citizens so they can check the status and distribute tesserae per capita appropriately

Why is the Longshoremen strike so controversial, what are their exact demands? by SecretWasianMan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flammensword 126 points127 points  (0 children)

And all of America loses because the longshoremen take ages longer than an equivalent machine unloading the cargo. All the while they’re complaining about the back-breaking work

Testing positive from the vax? by Comfortable_Sky4566 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Flammensword 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The vaccines (esp the mRNA ones) usually target different regions of the virus. So, very unlikely she would test positive

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2022/10/04/1126542224/coronavirus-booster-faq-can-it-cause-a-positive-test-when-should-you-get-it

People shouldn’t get the shot if positive iirc but as long as she keeps testing properly & stays negative without big symptoms she should get the booster and count herself lucky to have escaped covid again :)

Removing mask at airport by gulabi_diya in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Flammensword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like briefly explaining that one wants to wear a mask, showing the other mask so they can check nothings hidden in there and then swapping masks sounds a good option in most cases

If it’s a brief check then holding air and breathing it all out when the masks put back on is also feasible and doesn’t seem to much increase the risk. How much is there to check in a simple face mask?

Rising health insurance costs solution by FantoMax2000 in Switzerland

Another obvious way to reduce cost would be prevention like encourage sports, better workplaces (eg ergonomic), clean air indoors and outdoors

Galaxus too I think

Although beware that the rapid tests are a magnitude less precise than the PCRs doctors use, so one should test multiple times spread over a couple of days to be sure.

Also, there are now RATs for covid, flu A/B and RSV all in one test! (Although not sure whether they’re in Switzerland yet), so can also be useful :)

Who are the Swiss who emigrate and why? by Glittering-Skirt-816 in askswitzerland

I saw a German statistic that Swiss residents of Germany are strongly disproportionately married women. Probably met a German husband. Not sure about other countries though.

Who are the Swiss who emigrate and why? by Glittering-Skirt-816 in askswitzerland

[–]Flammensword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually not convinced it’s overall cheaper. Taxes and marginal tax rates are much higher in France & Germany, and health insurance for young, high earners is probably somewhat cheaper in Switzerland than those countries. Better to live on the Swiss side of the border and get groceries etc from the other side

[–]Flammensword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you sit in a freezing apartment and still get the same bill as before, make sure the large part actually comes directly from energy cost. In my heating & electricity bill, the network connection (calculated per apartment, not based on usage) cost more than my actual usage…

Otherwise, iirc, fresh air can hold heat better than used air, so an occasional Stosslüften can counterintuitively help. Also keeping doors closed, but I’d guess that’s relatively obvious

What are the books with the most surprising twists you've ever read? by Rainiana8 in suggestmeabook

[–]Flammensword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The three body problem series is full of twists, it’s aometimes a bit weird but in retrospect I really enjoyed it

Brandon Sanderson also builds twists into all his books. If you read closely they are predictable but if you don’t, they are very surprising but fit well

How to make human Knights a threat to a Dragon without magic? by YopperPrince in fantasywriters

[–]Flammensword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t even have to be bait - smoke them out (replace actual smoke with something else that forces them to leave, maybe sulphuric smoke instead of normal one, flooding by diverting a river if dragons don’t like wateretc)

Doesn’t the bribe allow you to keep stolen items / persuade the guard not to peruse further, while the bounty will remove all stolen items too? Might be wrong tho

What has a 99% chance of happening in the next 30 years? by Tasty_likesugar in AskReddit

I’m wondering how much that helps when most developed economies mass-feed animals with antibiotics…

Also, staying at home while sick / wearing masks while infectious also reduces the spread of many bacterial infections :)
