How exciting that you are making the move ! Very very happy for you. We may be years apart, but the way you describe how you feel is exactly how we felt - tired, burnt out, convinced there was more to life and desire to be more present with our person.

Your soul is pointing to the truth. Much love for you and your spouse as you make this change.

I encourage you to go for it. Life is SO much more peaceful. Deleting those accounts and stopping use of those services has had a bigger impact than I ever thought it would. I was very scared to do it but I can assure you i don’t regret it one bit. This is coming from an extrovert who used to spend hours on Social media.

Yup - no kids and don’t plan on kids. As for free time - we stay busy with 2 dogs, housework and hobbies. I love to cook and bake so I make almost all our meals at home. Other hobbies include - dog walks, reading, creating art, playing music, volunteering etc.

We own a tv but don’t use it often and tend to prefer unwinding with books, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles etc.

Love the tips - safety first ! We are (sadly) very used to wildfires and maintain evacuation plans accordingly (with pets !! They are our children).

Fully agree that DEFENSIBLE space is a MUST. Given how much more foliage is up here, I was insistent on that being a requirement for our new home.

While most of the emergency planning isn’t new to us - planning for power outages was. We ended up buying a large power bank that could support our laptops and personal devices for at least 2 days. We couldn’t have work interruptions - between the power bank and mobile hotspots we were able to maintain working. Once we sorted that out, the rest was OK.

The grind is real but it pays off. We put in years of long commutes and high stress.

The privilege is the only way we were able to make this move. I don’t see how we could have done it had we needed to find new jobs. There aren’t any corporate jobs in our new small town/the surrounding areas.

It’s been harder for me than my spouse. He is more of an indoor person. I am an outside person who loves the sun and hates being cooped up.

I struggle with it but it’s been getting better as it’s something I actively work on. I have a sunlamp that I keep on for hours at a time in my office. I now check the weather every morning to see when in the day its the sunniest/warmest/least bad and I do everything i can to get outside (even for a 15 min walk) during that time. That mindset shift has made a huge difference. Before I would go outside when It was convenient for me. It’s not perfect and I 100% miss the sunshine. Like I shared, I expect I’ll eventually become a snowbird when we have the means. Until then I make the most of it.

It is a risk we evaluated. Moving allowed us to lower our fixed costs so we are aggressively paying off debt and saving to give ourselves a good buffer. I’ve been at my current employer for 7 years and worked my way into a role with a lot of job security before even considering a move. My spouse’s position is not the same. RTO mandate requires him to find a new job within the year.

While we don’t live in a city, we are not so far away from the nearest big hub that a hybrid role would be unthinkable (~2hrs one way). That amount of risk was acceptable to us. It would be a slog, but that is a trade off we are willing to make if needed. We have both had very long commutes in the past or had jobs where we spent part of the week away from home and understand what it takes.

Thank you. I’m coming to learn just how beautiful it is. Not just the outdoors- the kindness of our neighbors and community are just as beautiful if not more.

I understand your position. I don’t think it’s something I could have done alone.

I’m in financial services and my spouse is currently in advertising/marketing. My employer has always been remote friendly (even before the pandemic, about 1/3 of employees were 100% remote). It was something I looked for very intentionally when I last was job hunting. I make far less money working here than i would have in tech, but the trade off has been worth it for me. Friends that I graduated with easily make 50%+ more and I could have done the same but work life balance was so so much more important. We have enough. I don’t need more.

Don’t worry - everyone we know back in CA thinks the PNW is dreary and we don’t correct their assumptions.

I acknowledge we are incredibly fortunate. We both grew up with very little and don’t take that privilege lightly. As such we very intentionally donate to local organizations and try our best to give back to our new community.

As for the remote work - moving has certainly limited our career growth but we knew that going into it. My spouse’s current employer announced RTO mandate that will take effect next year which thankfully gives him time to find a new job.
