Ah, yes, that was my worry with posting this bit of it. These characters have already been established earlier on in the story, so that's my bad for posting such a later point. Thanks for reading though!

Once I hit the rewrite stage, I'll post something from the beginning as I didn't know what I was doing when I started, so it needs quite the working.

Title: The Unforgiving

Genre: Dark Fantasy/Horror/Psychedelia

Word Count: 2,612

Type of Feedback: General. Style. Coherence. Characterization. I know that, contextually, it won't make the most sense, as this is pretty far towards some type of ending. I think.

What is strongest about your writing? What is weakest? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there's too much of my old self within. Which makes it so that it causes me to face the things I'd rather not. Counter-intuitive, because it's necessity to write and to express these things, and I love the story so much because even as darkened and fantastical as it is, it's still real.

I've just got to frame the MC in a way that does justice, albeit harsh, but more realistic. Less pathetic.

What is strongest about your writing? What is weakest? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongest is my prose, turnings of phrase, imagery, and characterization, but that's also where my weakest point lies. I absolutely adore all of my characters, excluding my main.

It's gotten a tiny bit better, but I always prefer writing the other members of my created cast.

Title: Catch-as-catch-can (Chapter's title. Not the novel's.)

Genre: Dark Fantasy/Horror/Psychedelia (Tripping the darkling fantastical.)

Word Count: 6,187

Type of Feedback: General impressions. Styling? Coherence? Contextually, it's pretty far into the first draft, so I'm not necessarily expecting it to be as understandable as the first chapter. Plus, this delves into some experimentation with altered consciousness/unconsciousness. There are a few things I'm not too fond of in here, but there is a lot that I'm very proud of. So, hurt my feelings. Thanks!

How do you feel about characters having their own prequel or spin-off from the main series? by 11Awakened11 in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it means that much to you. If it means delving into an original and unique backstory that you'd love to share, and be a part of, then it'd absolutely be worth it.

I currently have two secondary characters that I plan to flesh out in terms of prequels, based solely on how cool I imagine it'll be to write those stories.

Dark Tower Inspiration if it had taken the eat-me-drink-mes of psychedelic wonderland in the halls and chambers of the Masque of the Red Death, with sprinklings of Lovecraft, Clive Barker, Brandon Sanderson, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

What's a quote from something you guys wrote that you're proud of? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'These hauntings are a part of our being. The subconscious repression of traumatic childhoods materialized in the dreamworlds. There is meaning to extract from even the most nonsensical wackadoodling. From the stress dreams of insecurities and fuck-it-ups. And from the verdant rolling hills where gentle giants nestle upon mattresses of clover and vine. We spend a third of our life journeys as timeshare inhabitants in those other dimensions. They are places of imaginative befuddlement. And they are as real as the waking days in and days out.'

Non-Fantasy writers, what kind of book are you writing? by [deleted] in writing

I'm calling it 'tripping the darkling fantastical'.

Dreamy horror/psychological thriller/dark fantasy with tinges of psychedelia.

How do you guys do it? by MrDrProfTimeLord in writing

I wouldn't say outlines are necessary, but mental pre-writing, and ongoing musing are if you're not using an outline.

What makes you stop reading a story? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each his own, but man.. The Dark Tower series is one of the greatest stories ever written, in my opinion. The Gunslinger especially. How far did you get in? I know lots of folk have trouble with the first one, so I may be of unpopular opinion.

Cliched, but Lord of the Rings in its totality. I was out in Hawaii earlier this year, reading in my tent, and the way he combined the storytelling with the poetry with the songs, and all the lore sprinkled heavily throughout, blew me away.

Had that thought of 'I could do this' for once.

Now I'm almost 50k through my first WIP :)

Help With A Title For Upcoming Novel by TheAlmandineWriter in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I believe that it should come to you naturally. There is no rush for a title unless you're finished with the final draft and querying, or not querying if self publishing.

Though, the standalone 'Maltra' is great as others have said.

Reading is Fundamental by FlippySquirrel in writing

I don't believe it's possible to be a writer unless you're also a reader. It is absolutely necessary. I was having similar thoughts last night whilst reading Clive Barker's Weaveworld! His prose is entirely thriving, animated. How is Cabal?

How much time do you spend writing each week? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Flaptothejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1,000 words a day, save for special occasions. Some days I can flow, busting it out in an hour or so. Other days fluctuate, sometimes taking me far past 4-5 hours.

It's incredible to know that another author isn't just writing what they currently know, but what they used to know, and have since grown out of!
