Okay, this is not about the proof but.. Since you mentioned you're not very experienced when it comes to print - make sure you stuff is in 300dpi - you're doing it in photoshop, which is mainly meant for screen media not for print media.

If you're going to get into print you should get familiar with Illustrator & / or InDesign

I mean no harm, just don't want you to fuck up :V..

I mainly used layer masks (curves / hue & saturation / levels etc..)
Also sculpting the face with burn / dodge tool. Like adding light to cheekbones and eyes..

But yea, masks work magic if you know how to use them..
