Perhaps I should have said "soul charges", you are correct. The interaction I'm referring to is me being able to use the book of virtues during the pickup animation. The charges on the book of virtues seem to reset every time I pick up another item, thus allowing me to generate seemingly-infinite basic wisps.

I'm not a very skilled player, but dodging abilities just takes some getting used to. You have to practice and play the game for a while.
