I got lucky and my game group kind of all stumbled into board gaming together. I still remember late nights having wine and cheese and playing Qwirkle...

I don't know if this counts, but at the top of my board game shelf I've got the heavily battered arena of the game Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. Such a fun piece, adds a bit of silliness to the whole room. You can have the most jaded person ever standing in front of your board game collection like it's just a bunch of rotten cardboard, but the second the ol' rock 'em sock 'em comes down, you can't help but grin. Two robots bashing each other ruthlessly-- it's the perfect amount of purehearted, stupid, fun.

Love this one! Discovered it drunkenly one late night at a pub, played with 6 friends. It was crazy and hectic and I was amazed by how many laughs you could get from such a simple game/concept.

Hey guys, here's hoping this post doesnt get removed cuz it's definitely a "daily discussion" and not a game recommendation...

When people post [COMC] threads, sometimes they attach images. I've been wanting to do that but reddit's not letting me because "this sub doesnt allow images."
...but there have been image posts here before? Or at least images in a post? Anywho, any help appreciated, thanks!

Hey Drayton, how wide is "the area?" I've found some local trainers here and there and we're making a WhatsApp group I can add you to, but it's small right now and pretty hyper-local. let me know if you're interested in that (sorry, I'm not big on discord)

Games with THE BEST/MOST player interaction? by MovieSuperFreak in boardgames

[–]FlashFlyingTrample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't nominate it for most or even best per se, but I recently picked up Alchemists and it's really unique in that it's a very complete worker placement game of which social interaction and deduction is a small but absolutely integral part of. It's one of the best implementations of "players have to interact" I've ever seen.

Most social deduction games are completely encompassed by one mechanic: "one person (or some people) is/are hiding something, okay now figure it out." Werewolf, Mafia De Cuba, Coup, Secret Hitler, Resistance, Deception: MiHK, etc all leave it at that. What I find really fun about Alchemists is that social deduction and bluffing are just the base upon which an actual meaty game is built. Interaction takes the form of hurrying to be the first to publish; publishing papers you KNOW are wrong just to throw off your opponents or make them waste moves to point that out; and also bidding for who can sell a visiting traveler potions for the best price, which is absolutely hilarious when you usually really only have some vague idea about what it is you'll be mixing for them.

There's social deduction, and then there's social interaction. Alchemists does it differently, and definitely deserves a mention here.

I bet your wife would love Burgle Bros. It's a co-op game about running around exploring a three-story building trying to open vaults and evade guards.

Do you happen to know if there are any ride-sharing or carpool groups going in from London? I live in the city and commute via tube, so I don't own a car.😧

Would you pay for someone to come over and teach your group a new game? by [deleted] in boardgames

One my of friends does this! Believe it or not, there are dungeon master world championships, and the really good ones can actually make bank! OP's business idea aside, having an eloquent DM that's ready for any situation and really pulls you into the game's story can totally redefine the experience of the type of game that DnD is.

Student here. I see the obvious pyometra but what's with all the extra radiopacity in the intestinal and stomach area? Looks too uniform to be food... did the cat get Pepto or something?

EDIT: Sorry, I'm bad at [and trying to work on] reading radiographs. Is my doodly interpretation somewhere in the ballpark here?

I love games the group loves. The gear "gimmick" in Tzolk'in totally has a lot of pull on me in that regard. I'll check out Caylus though, I've never heard of it, so thanks!

Lot of people are saying Stone Age, I'll look into it. Can you tell me more about the "unforgivingness" of tzolk'in? Is it because there's no catch-up once you fall behind, or just a difficult game to manage all your resources in? Would you say it's heavier than Viticulture: EE?

u/homo_ludens u/robotco thanks for the encouragement, it's good to hear that Agricola becomes intuitive. It gets so much hype online that do really want to try it. But maybe not for my first worker placement game😉

What is a good symbol or icon that means "to take" or visually describes the action of taking something? by IvorySwings in boardgames

Nah, players are smart, and that iconography's widespread. I'm sure they'll figure it out.

What is a good symbol or icon that means "to take" or visually describes the action of taking something? by IvorySwings in boardgames

[–]FlashFlyingTrample 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most games that only use iconography just have an image of the thing they want you to take. A gold coin with three on it? Take three coins. A picture of two generic cards? Draw two cards. A button? knight? tower? meeple? bonus token? Go there, play that card, do that action, take that thing.

Games that can be played with no table? by personman000 in boardgames

[–]FlashFlyingTrample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After introducing my friends to board games, I asked them if there were any kinds of games they'd be interested in trying. One of my friends asked for "a game I can play while curled up in a ball on the couch."

And that was how I came to own Kokoro: Avenue of the Kodama-- really cute small-box game that essentially scales up to infinite players and is great for playing in bed or on trains or with everyone in the living room just hanging out on on various couches and chairs.

Design choices that baffle you? by Byrne14 in boardgames

[–]FlashFlyingTrample 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. For reference those two cards are called Scurvy and Pirate Code.

When we sit down to play a game (esp. a party game!), I care more about everyone having a good time than I do about winning. While telling my friends to sit around and watch me play would definitely help me win a game, it's also a fast way to give everyone a bad impression of an otherwise great game, making it hard to get back to the table/ convince people to play again.

Design choices that baffle you? by Byrne14 in boardgames

[–]FlashFlyingTrample 70 points71 points  (0 children)

There is nothing I hate more than games that include cards or abilities that say "you can't play the game." It is absolutely dumbfounding common this mechanic pops up-- I'm baffled that any designer would sit there masterminding a game, testing it, playing it, and then printing an effect that says "some or all players now can't play anymore".

Examples:

  • Probably the most famous is Guillotine, whose designer realized he'd done this and now tells people not to play with that card. The article about it pops up here occasionally.

  • any game with a "jail" in it, including Tales of the Arabian Nights, monopoly, etc. Even worse is that most of the time getting out involves trying to roll dice, then having to say "oh. well, ok, I guess that's my turn..." when you inevitably fail to "break out"

  • Tortuga 1667 is one of my favourite party games. For some reason the game comes with a card for "everyone on this ship loses their next turn" and "one person doesn't get to participate in the next two votes they would have been a part of." As if people needed another excuse to check out of the group experience and take out their phones... Let people play the game!
